During our review of the Roads challenge entries, we discovered that the previous first-place entry in that challenge was taken outside the challenge dates, and that the EXIF data on the image had been tampered with to hide that fact. As previously announced, that entry was disqualified.

We have also reviewed that participant's past entries and discovered six other entries that were outside the dates of the respective challenges. In one of those cases, an original with falsified EXIF was submitted. Because of this, the seven entries in question have been disqualified, and the user who submitted them has been permanently banned from DPChallenge.

The seven challenges which were recalculated were:

Road (Challenge 436) - Previously announced
Pattern (Challenge 426)
Collections (Challenge 412)
Single Light Source II (Challenge 406)
Landscape II (Challenge 403) - Previously announced
Bizarre Nature (Challenge 272)
Hope (Challenge 249)

Situations like this are a rare exception in our overwhelmingly fair and honest community, and we consider it our obligation to you to treat this as a serious matter. We appreciate that nearly all the members of the community respect each other by respecting the rules of our challenges -- it is this fairness and mutual respect that makes DPChallenge a fun and worthwhile place to compete.

Thank you,
DPChallenge Site Council

Great work guys 'n' gals. So 2 x 1sts, 7th, 22nd, 66th, 113th and a 209th bite the dust. Nice comfort, no matter how long it takes, to all those who toil honestly at the craft.

At least he could have been deported to a penal colony as suggested by someone earlier.

How were those images taken outside of challenge dates or with tampered EXIF data that ribboned (or top 10'ed) not validated on the spot? I mean, that's how he got caught.... but how did those previous entries go unnoticed for so long?

Of the previous entries, only one had proof previously submitted (the other 1st-place entry). There were seven date violations (including the Roads challenge), but "only" two cases of EXIF tampering.

Well in this case I don't mind the extra work involved in changing the stats. Great work SC! If there is one thing that bugs me is a person that cheats and he got what he deserves.

One question to the SC are you going to keep a check on his IP address to make sure he doesn't try to sign up as a registered user or even become a member again under a false name? Just a thought.

I know that we essentially only complete for a digital ribbon but I commend the Admins & the SC for respecting the members of DPC by taking petty acts of cheating very seriously.

I personally am very grateful that there are standards by which we are all held to & that the majority of us who play on the same level field, for fun & the love of fotography, are honoured by acts just like this one.

Thanks Good People!
Peace

Out of curiosity (I am sure others are wondering this) how do you know there are date violations and/or falsified EXIF if proof had never been submitted? How can you determine this without the original file? As far as I know my entries themselves have no EXIF data on them...

I'm not doubting this is the case, mind you, just curious about the steps that are taken.

Same user that started the furor when it was discovered the EXIF data in his blue-ribbon "road" shot was falsified. All these referenced entries were by him.You can satisfy your curiosity by looking at the last page of entries in that challenge. No need to bandy his name about in public I don't think.

I figured out who it was...

Glad the SC is being vigilant.

WOW- It's ironic how close his username was to the opposite of what he done?
alithenake vs. authentic

His username was alithenake but his entries were not authentic

Well done, SC, I think that DQ of all previous entries and permanent ban are quite appropriate actions to take when someone has been found manipulating the EXIF data.

Anyone could make a mistake and accidentally break a rule - but manipulating EXIF data is outright cheating and couldn't possibly be an accident.

One question, This person could easly return correct, just make a different username, and use someone elses billing info.

To answer a few questions here...
We deal with odd situations like this all the time, maybe not to this extent, but yes, we are aware of the future steps we will be taking such as monitoring IP's and such.

As for the questions about determining falsified EXIF...
Well, some details need not be shared. It's our little secret. If we told you, then it wouldn't be very effective would it?
I have to wonder how many people got a sinking feeling in the pit of there stomachs when they found out we have a 'new super weapon'?
Aww...I'm just playin, don't worry.

Troy, the user in question already had created a new account. One which he created for the sole purpose of posting his public apology in the other thread. SC picked up on this new account right away, and took care of it.
We really have super powers. We're not just a bunch off goons that sit around all day in our undies and type meaningless crap on the internet...
Well...Ok, maybe a few of us are...but mostly we are 'professionals'.
From the words of the famous philosophers 'the swollen members' "Come stand amongst us, just don't ask us who brung us
Just one of them amongst us, come on, you can TRUST US."

Edit to add...That wasn't really a question you asked
