I'm going to New Orleans tomorrow for the first time. I have an idea of what I want to see but since I've never been there before I dont really know what to expect. I was wondering if there are any DPCers from New Orleans who could give me some travel tips and perhaps let me know what the must get pics are.

Thank you,

June

I used to live in the Big Easy. City Park is simply beautiful and offers a spectacular garden. The Riverwalk for photos of the Mississippi. If you have time drive across the twin span and visit the Mardi Gras Museum on the West Bank. Also in Kenner there is a smaller Mardi Gras Museum, Toy Train Museum and a Saints Hall of Fame they are actually worth a few hours of your time. There is a really nice mall in Kenner also the Esplande, the Lakeside in Metairie is also fantastic for shopping. If you have about 2 hours to kill close sunset drive across the causeway. You can't really stop for photos but the sunset if splendid going across. If you plan to spend most of your time in the Quarter go to Pat O'Briens and have a hurricane, Jax Brewery (it's a cool mall, the St Louis Cathedral, avoid Big Daddy's unless you want to see women getting slammed around in a wrestling ring.

AND most of all if any one walks up to and says..."I will bet you that I can tell you where your shoes came from" Look at them and say oh yeah so can I and then say the name of the place you just walk out of and they are now standing here in front of you." It is one of the oldest street cons in the city.

Oh and don't buy anything in the first shop you go in, in the Quarter you can always go back to it but I can almost gaurentee you will find it in another shop for less.

Go to Bourbon St first night to get it out of your system...then enjoy the "other" New Orleans. The Audubon Zoo and Park are great places for photos...lots of sailing views and shots on the South Shore of Lake Pontchatrain...drive the causeway (24 miles over the lake)to Mandeville...there are many mansions (Chamber of Commerce can help)and some of the older roads west of town toward Arcadia have interesting scenes...Jackson Square and the Market...go to Jackque-a-Mos (not spelled right) and Wolfes restaurants for real Louisiana food, avoid the overpriced tourist spots in the quarter...ride the trolley everywhere it goes...and hit some of the out of the way jazz spots...oh, and wait in line for Preservation Hall...it's worth it!

Enjoy...

Personally I like the Monteleone (last family owned hotel in New Orleans) or Monaco (they'll provide a goldfish for your room and have a neat little jazz bar).

Monaco is great - I stayed in one of those in Chicago. I like the W Hotel in New Orleans - near Bourbon St, but not on Bourbon St - in the French Qtr but not so noisy.

The cemeteries are well worth going for a tour - we got a two tour deal - French Qtr ghost/vampire tour at night and a cemetery tour during the day - was well worth it for a good experience.

Cafe Du Monde is good for a sugar and caffine rush - south east corner of Jackson Sq. The trolly car is good to see what's going on too. The casino is worth avoiding.

I grew up in the French Quarter.

Stay out of Armstong Park at night :)

Make sure to visit:
* Cafe Du Monde
* Jackson Square
* St. Louis Cathedreal
* JAX Brewery
* The Riverwalk
* Take a ride on the Riverfront Trolly (Red)
* Walk along the moonwalk to see the Mississippi River
* Take the walking Haunted History Tour of the French Quarter (//www.hauntedhistorytours.com/)
* Gamble a little at Harrah's Casino
* Take a tour of the Superdome
* Then take the OTHER streetcar - St. Charles (green) to see uptown and the garden district
* Take a Plantation and swamp tour (I suggest taking this one in a A/C'd Van)

Oh, and PS, beyond the "I know where you got your shoes" scam, a newer version with "I know how many letters are in your first name" so watch out for that scam also. (13 = Y-o-u-r f-i-r-s-t n-a-m-e)

Hope this helps!

The shoes and first name thing don't even seem like scams - they just seem like pre-school jokes.

I was warned about these before and actually did have a couple of people try them on - they get really annoyed when you tell them the correct answer though - I guess I just don't see why they expect people to fall for em...

I wonder if I should take my Dimage7i or just my Kodak DX4900.

Kodax with 2x optical zoom IMO is a bad choice for travel shots,I would take Minolta with 7 x for better zooming capabilites!

Take them both. You can always have the Dimage locked up in the hotel safe if you don't want to leave it in your room. There will be places where you won't want the cumbersome of the 7i and would prefer the Kodax, and at the same time there will times when you will want the options of the 7i such as if you take a steamboat journey on the Nachez you will want the 7i for the distance capabilities and will really miss it if you don't have it.
