I have posted something like this in the past, but I feel that posting it again could be warranted...

Let's take a brief look at the concept of the ROUND challenge. When *I* look at this topic, and if I was in the process of making photos for that challenge, there are a couple goals that I would strive for.

There are also several approaches that I see here, which is the case about every week. There are photos where the roundness and curves of the subject material in the photo DOMINATE the image. There are also quite a few photos where there are simply round or curved objects in the photo. In a literal sense, both types of photos 'meet' the challenge.

When you have a subject like ROUND or SQUARE or whatever the topic may be, you should probably consider that idea deeply when making your photo. In the 'round' challenge, I have been looking for photos of two types that I score higher than average.

1 - a photo where the curvature itself is the subject and provides a dominant theme in the image.

2 - a very well executed 'subtle' approach to the curve theme.

When you are working on a challenge photo, there are a couple of things you can try that will help you determine if your photo meets the challenge in a strong way or not.

Show your photo to a friend... preferably a non-photographer friend. Ask that person to describe the photo to you and ask them what the 'theme' of the photo is in their eyes. If they respond to you with the challenge topic, you know you have nailed the subject :)

Approaching the challenge topic from a 'subtle' standpoint can work in good or bad ways for you. There are some voters out there who will definitely enjoy it when it is well executed. There are also some voters who would rather see the challenge topic as a DOMINANT part of the image. I believe, in most cases, that the DOMINANT theme probably works better in a challenge.

Hey John,

This is great advice and something I had not thought of. I will definitely try this in future challenges. Thanks for the super idea :)

There's another lesson to be drawn more obliquely from John's comment. Whilst there is an absolutely valid interpretation of the challenge in the meaning of the word 'round' as in drinks, guns, whatever, the winner will undoubtedly be a shot that fits the first and most obvious meaning.

PS. Not everyone reads the tag-line to the challenge, either before submitting or voting on challenges.
