Being a newbie at this, I tried to just get my photos out there to contests wherever I could. I submitted to circle of photographers and picture.com. I was so dissapointed when my "free contests" turned into for only $70.00 you too can purchase your picture in a coffee table book and move on in the contest. Now I'm pretty sure everyone is a "semi-finalist". Not only that but I've been awarded a pin (which also I have to buy) and a plaque (which I get free with the $70 book). Not to mention for a mere $600 I can go to las vegas for a photo convention where I can stand up and talk about my photo. It just bugs me that people get sucked into these things. If it really was an award wouldn't I get it for free?

They are theives. They print EVERY picture sent to them, there is NO contest.... then they make their $$s by getting you to spend money to see your pic in print. Run, run far and fast.

Edit to mention there are several other threads where this is discussed at length.

Its the same as Poetry.com

I sent a poem about how much poetry.com is a scam and the admins are a bunch of thieves.

"Congratulations Ben, the admins have chosen your excellent poem to be published in out annual award winners book! etc etc"

Yes I did it too. I asked around here when I got my letter and received much the same comments, that they print everything. Really bumed when I heard that, it was my first contest entry also.

lol Ben! Yes unforunately I just got a letter in the mail from poetry.com too. I'm sure I will be invited to the international poetry contest in no time...although if I wrote your poem I would definately pay to go there and read it in front of everyone :)

Picture.com is a major scam, and what a spammer. I get snailmail almost every week now from then. I don't know what to do to get them to stop sending me stupid "Your photo won! - Buy book" spam anymore. Suggestions are welcome!

When I created my first web site, I entered it for a golden web award and won. Same thig, I was offered a badge, trophy, whatever for money.

I entered another site, it had one page only and simply said "Your are all a bunch of F******g theives (without the stars) Would you believe it.... I won another award. :-)

I want something similar to junk credit card snail mail. My rule is that if they make me open it by hiding it's junk, I send back that replied paid envelope, nothing in it obviously.

Sombody somewhere mentioned that you used to be able to tape the reply paid to a phone book (thereby getting rid of two bits of junk in one go) and they were charged for the return postage - not sure if the post office will take that now, if they ever did, but I liked the idea.

Never heard of them but it's just another scam that is all too common in every other area, so why not.

LOL! I'm sure you could slip some lead tire weights or other heavy object into the envelope. Just beware when you later win an award for Direct Marketing...

Funny - my dad would tape the "postage paid" junk mail he got to bricks and mail them. Never got in trouble for it. :)

Don't feel bad, my mom says my pics just don't 'make the cut' for her fridge.

Let's all send them an underexposed picture of our lens covers and see if they print a bunch of black squares in their book.

Just remember that ALMOST every free contest, even ones with prizes and especially if it by a magazine, radio station, newspaper, TV etc etc have in the contest rules that they own the rights to that photo and can do whatever they want with it. What a great way to get the best Stock Photos for very little. If they have a $1000 cash prize, it was cheaper than purchasing great stock photos. Contests can be fun but remember they are all business first ... their business.

Now as far as DPC and Better Photos, I believe that you retain full rights and they may use them for their own marketing but can't sell them of use them in commercial venues. Is that correct DPC bosses?

Some time ago I saw a link to a 'poem' there that is all made up words with no meaning at all. I imagine it's still there somewhere.

Hahahaha! Love the idea of sending them brick and phone books. Think I could ship them a small child?? :P

I once got collection letters for 30 cents, I seriously considered sending them 30 pennies in the return envelope.

The bill wasn't even worth the 3 or 4 letters they sent out to me, morons.
