I have an old (v6) somewhat suspect :) version of PS and also the legit Elements 2 that came with my camera (I need the batching functions, so elements is not really an option for me). With $ a little tight I am looking at options (I know I can get a reduced cost on the PS CS2 version due to the elements thing).

The question is that I see GIMP as advertising it's more in the PS class but is this true or is it more at the elements level?

Anybody used both PS & GIMP:
- How do they compare?
- Would/Have you changed from PS to GIMP?
- What do you most hate about GIMP?
- What do you most love about GIMP (apart from price)?

Photoshop is like a BMW, while Gimp is like a GAZ Volga. Both will safely get you to your destination, although the BMW will get you there faster, and in more comfort. :)
The Gimp needs 2 things desperatly:
1. Adjustment layers
2. Color managment.

I would say the Gimp is closer to PS than Elements, but if it's in your budget go for PS, if not Gimp is the next best thing.

I understand that at one point, Canon and Adobe had this "thing" going on where one could purchase the latest version of Photoshop for a drastically reduced price for buying certain models of Canon DSLRs...

Perhaps this is still true.

While I haven't been realy digging into it lately, The GIMP is getting better and more close to PS with each passing release, I understand that its approaching PS, albiet at a leisurely pace. The GIMPE is more powerful then Elements 2.0, but for most of what I need to do, I make do perfectly with Elements 2.0.

The Gimp also desperately needs an aggravating bug fixed which makes it continually pop up error screens if you have card readers which do not contain cards. There is currently no fix in place. It's very aggravating, every time you try to open a file it rattles off a silly error message - or two or three - about not having a disk in the drive.

GIMP is a very promising thing. It's a miraculous thing considering it is free. Some of the menu "names" for items are pretty confusing, and actions and filters that are familiar to PS gurus are just not right either.

It also doesn't interface as smoothly with Windows file system as it should; it retains a lot of Linux/Unix in the way it deals with some things. Nothing wrong with that for those who work that way, but it does actually slow down those not familiar.

I like Gimp but I hate it. It's not natural for me.

I do not see the error that you are receiving. I have two machines with The GIMP installed on it, both of which have card readers that are empty 90%+ of the time.

Are you talking about a Linux install, or Win? I DO see it, consistently on two machines, and it's a published bug. Any ideas as to why your install doesn't do what mine does?

Check the eighth question on the FAQ...

I couldn't tell you. I have it running on two different Windows XP Professional machines with all of the latest OS Patches.
