This is kind of funny. Reading posts in this thread, it seems like there are a lot of people out there who are as opinionated about Ken Rockwell as he is about photo equipment.

Cranky Ken is just this guy, you know? I don't think he's a fool or a genious or a Photo God. But he has a lot of photographic experience and he shares his often very opinionated and often useful views on photo equipment for free. Once you get past whatever angst-driven BS he adds to his reviews, you see that there may be info you can use or at least compare with other sources.

I never take what any one person says as the Holy Grail of photo knowledge (though Galen Rowell would come close). When I need some good info on Nikon or Nikon-based 3rd party equipment, I check out Ken's site along with a few others - especially Thom Hogan's - to help make my choices. Personally I'm greatful to him for providing the info he does, and if he makes some money off link-clicks then more power to him.

FWIW, this thread appears third if you google "ken rockwell" and first (yes, first) if you google just "genius or fool." I suspect that a lot of folks see this thread as their first exposure to DPC, via that first path.

First?

For me, it comes up second after the lyrics to "Genius or a Fool" by Jonatha Brooke.

I really don't get what he means with this.

"Jesus Christ's dad Joseph built a masterpiece of a wooden staircase in a church in New Mexico in 1873"

Is he for real? Is there maybe some explanation behind why he would say Jesus' dad was alive in 1873?

There are links to the story there. It's apocryphal, for sure, and Rockwell might have been a little less declarative. Nevertheless, the story to which he links does hint at the possibility of someone having come on down from the hereafter to fix the staircase.

One comment, I am new to DSLR's and found Ken's site useful in making my final decision. I chose Nikon not because of what Ken had to say but because of my own research and testing, based on my current needs. Ken is just another voice in the crowd. I suspect that most people that visit his site understand that. I am not qualified to judge his technical reviews or opinions. However, I am qualified to judge the design of his website and the organization of his information. I can say I have seen better website projects from seniors in high school. It is quite a strange mix of content and design. I would think that for someone working in the visual media he would have a better grasp of how to present his information. Perhaps he should look at some blog software? I think he probably has too many commercial plugs for that to happen.

Hi SysLib. Welcome to DPC! There are lots of views here, and a lot more of interest than this thread (that for some reason refuses to die). Please stick around and try the challenges - it is a great way of learning.

Ken Rockwell: The facts

I particularly liked Ken Rockwell doesn't use flash ever since the Nagasaki incident.

Haha! Here's my fave;

Sure, Ken Rockwell deletes a bad photo or two. Other people call these Pulitzers.

Didn't know about Ken untill this post.

Just read 'What Makes a Great Camera?' by Ken Rockwell.

The word 'Nikon' features 19 times.
The word Canon 6 times.

Plus a whole bunch of online ads on where to Buy Nikon.

Biast? No way hehe!

Brilliant!

Ken Rockwell is the Chuck Norris of photography

I like the fact that he supplies photographs to back up his thoughts. I think the difference between Ken Rockwell and Phil Askey is that one does his for fun, the other probably gets paid. Not to sure if Phil does get paid, just my opinion based on what dpreview.com is doing.

Awesome. Thank you for posting that link!

"Ken Rockwell isn't the Chuck Norris of photography; Chuck Norris is the Ken Rockwell of martial arts."

Never was a truer word written.

I have only recently read some of Ken's work and although I will have to evaluate the settings he recommends for the D200 I have only had one for a couple months) I was interested in his statements about not needing a tripod for daylight work with a DSLR and especially with a VR lens. Can anyone give an opinion?

You guys are all (&@#in idiots. I love how all of you 'pro' photographers (many from canon) like to criticize someone just for giving you free advice, and not liking it. Ken does not even charge you to see his opinions on thousand dollar equipment that you will never get to see first hand, and you complain?

Ooh waah this, waah that, stop with this penis envy over being ken rockwell. Boo fricken hoo! work on your photography first, and then, once everyone knows your name; then you can criticize other photographers, but now, as joe schmo the 'photographer', stop your whining.

And fyi, posts on an online forum mean nothing in real world experience, in fact, I bet most of you have never stepped outside your living room to take some real pictures other than criticizing other people online. Unfortunately, this will never change. Fortunately for me; that means more decent picture opportunities, without crappy, biased 'photographers' like you who have no semblance of self respect or knowledge to even create a site of your own, so STOP BITCHING and act like the mature, responsible individuals you are.
