I dont have a photoshop of any kind, and there are too many versions of adobe to choose from. I have (or will have in a month, anyway) an Olympus D-560Z camera, and I want to be able to do the (black and white backround with one object standing out in color) sort of thing.. And other stuff of the sort.. I'm not rich.. But Id like to know which version I should buy??

Any suggestions?

You can go to the adobe website and do a 30 day trial of each. Since you are new to editing, I would recommend elements 4.

Adobe Tryouts

There is a program called "The Gimp" that is available for free and does everything Photoshop does. The downside is that you're swimming in a different stream, but most od what it does is analofous to PS stuff, so it's not hard to read PS suggestions and "translate" them into Gimp.

Hopefully others who actually USE the Gimp will weigh in here and advise; I've been using PS since V 1.1 so I'm set in my ways. If money is really an issue, and if you are not seeking a career as a graphic arts professional, The Gimp may be the way to go.

If you are a student or teacher there is an educational price for PhotoShop CS2, even the entire suite is something like $300. At full price CS2 is real expensive

Bear is right.. the GIMP does a lot of functions that PS performs. One of a few exceptions is Adjustment layers, but this can be worked around.

Als... and this is one major flaw as far as I'm concerned... the Dodge/Burn tools absolutely STINK!

But, the GIMP is free and is a very good graphics program ... so it's definitely something to think about.

Edit: PS, look who's wearing Blue now ... woo hoo... my first forum post as a member :-)

Since having the full PS, I can't go back. But, I think you should buy what you will get the most use out of and what you can afford. If you're a student or work in education (and won't use PS for a business) then get an educational version for a lot less.

Doesnt the camera comes bundled with some sort of photo retouching or editing software? That's a good start.

And then you might want to try GIMP since it's free.

You can always try out the trial versions of Adobe. Try before you buy!

I personally recommend PSP on PC based computers.. It works alot better since adobe is pretty much optimized for Mac based stuff.

I wouldn't recommend paying for elements. GIMP is free and much more powerful than elements. For free, elements is nice, and I use the two of them to do everything I want. If you're just starting give GIMP a try. It has a lot of features and does almost everything PS does. If you want to spend money... well, I just bought CS2 so I could do everything in one program. The education price for just photoshop is $300 or $400 for the whole suite. If thats an option, it's full featured and can be used for commercial endeavors.

You can download a trial version of CS2 from adobe's website. It's full featured and works for 30 days.

Well, I downloaded the 'free' Adobe.. Turns out, I can't use it without a sort of 'serial number' which obviously means that I need a serial number from a Package which, because it was supposed to be free, I dont have.. Also, when I went back and looked in My Programs, Adobe had absolutely vanished.. So much for 2 full days of downloading.. And that's all it was worth.. I'm utterly disappointed.. Hardcore..

And still, no one has told me where I can find this seemingly magical 'Gimp'

Where is it? I'm sad now.. =(

You could try this link: the GIMP for Windows but it may be out of date. Maybe a google search would find a newer version.

Hey Niteshade, you might ask if anyone has a version of Elements that came w/their camera kit that they never use because they use CS instead. There could be some discs just laying around that noone has used or registered.

I think that you can "skip" the registration code bit to access the 30 days' free access. You can telephone up if you want to buy.
