The most amazing scenery I ever witnessed while driving was coming into Yosimite valley, driving down from the north (on the 120, I think?). You come around a bend into the valley, and are looking down on it. When we turned the corner, it was late afternoon, and it has just stopped raining, with the sun shining through the clouds. The entire valley literally glowed! It was a site beyond description.

We also did highway 1 south from SF to LA - my wife was in the passenger seat - i.e. on the ocean/cliff side - and had white knuckles the whole way!

Oh that one is hard to beat, but the road to Hana on Maui is unmatched by any other.

I agree with you Pitsman and will soon be right there!
We are leaving the 29th for Sturgis, S.D. [rally] then riding down to Prescott Az. before going back to Oregon. We will rack up the bike miles this year.
I'll try and get a few nice shots of that route. Not easy to travel on a Harley with a large camera. I've done it many times but sure wish my E-20 was smaller and lighter for quicker access. I'll get some of the 'hotties' for you guys and some of the beefcake for the gals!!!!!

I've done both the Highway 1 road and the Hana road and while I enjoyed the Hana route it's hard to keep lunch down on that drive. I've only ever done it in the summer when rotting mangoes (mango trees everywhere) get mushed into a pulp on the side of the road, filling the air with a queasy stench. This isn't fun when you throw in the excessively narrow, meandering road.

A shot I took of Highway 1 from my car last year:

the most breath taking highway is the parks highway north from Banff to Jasper in canada. The Rockies here are spectacular, lakes and animals in abundance. Hiking trails throughout. The highway is in valleys and easy to drive. The one hairpin leg comes after the Columbia Icefields. Takes a day to drive without stopping to hike. I've taken this route many times and never tire of it. In earlier days we used to camp near Jasper. The Elk are quite common in Banff and Jasper walking through the villages without a care in the world.

I recently took one here on the Mountain Loop Highway. I haven't driven a dirt road in years but this has a one-lane dirt road for about 30 or 40 miles, I don't remember, all I know is I spent a couple of hours of driving on the dirt, that's how I got my "dusty road" photograph. See my gallery. Mountain Loop Highway

Oh see I have what they call an iron stomach... Mmm rotting mango's.
I thought the swishing back and forth around the car was a blast, gives you many chances to squish the other person.

Highway 1 south of there between Monterey and Santa Barbara (through the Big Sur area) is spectacular. Point Lobos (just south of Monterey) is one of the most-photographed pieces of coastline in the world.
You Want Me To Stand WHERE?
I shot this southward-looking view while driving north towards Big Sur last summer.

Hwy 550 in Colorado "The Million Dollar Highway" is nice but, my favorites in Colorado are Colo. Hwy 69 from Walsenburg north to Texas Creek (viewing to Sangre de Cristo Range)and US Hwy 285 from Salida to Buena Vista and US 24 north to Leadville (viewing Collegate & Mosquito Ranges and headwaters of the Arkansas River). These ranges have views of well over 30 of Colorado's 63 14,000 ft peaks, including the highest five or six in the state). Great views in all seasons.

The road to the isles is a great drive, I drove it last September and I am planning to drive it again when i'm in Scotland in late August this year.

I drove the Great Ocean Road in March this year, but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be as I had heard loads of good things about it before hand.

Born and raised in Ca. 20 miles from highway 1, driven it hundreds of times, isn't it funny that that Highway 1 didn't come to mind when I saw this thread. I think it's all too easy to become so accustomed to something so beautiful that it seems mundane.

It was attractive coastline, but I think a lot depends on the weather. The rainforest there was an interesting drive too.

A second vote for Going-To-The-Sun road in Glacier National Park... Of course, I'm biased because I've never seen any of these other places and Glacier is in my back yard. :) But still, it's truly spectacular.

Done my share of travelling, the road up the side of Loch Ness to Inverness is one of my all time highlights, there was a section of road from Innsbruk to Lucerne was also very impressive (have no idea what it was called), but you just cannot go past The Great Ocean Road for sheer beauty, in my opinion of course..... well, at least until I drive through the canadian rockies later this year anyway..... ;)

Driving the coast of California around Big Sur and Monterey Bay, Capitola, all quite lovely.

The Gaspe' Peninsula out to Perce' on the eastern portion of Quebec Province is beautiful, rugged, and quaint.

Though not a driving trip, the Amtrak train from California to New York was breathtaking. Especially in Utah. Ruby Canyon is only accessible by train, or raft, and I really loved it. The train was everything I hoped for and more. I had flown out to CA, and in retrospect, wish I'd taken the train roundtrip. Can't wait to do it again!

Another fine drive is through the Adirondack Mountains. Pick a spot, any spot on the map of the ADKS, and go. All pristine, and sparcely populated. Look for Tahawus, a really cool UNPOPULATED ghost town. My husband and I were once the only year round residents there, for five years. We were caretakers for an 11,000 acre estate. It was owned by NL Industries.
Tahawus

Here's another link. It's a recent development.
