Why, as a group, do we have an unwritten belief that the average DPC image has to be scored close to the arbitrary mathematical midpoint of 5.5(or below)? They are much better than that. School test scores in a range like that would be considered an abysmal failure.

And why, as a group, have we decided that even the best pictures by the most exceptional of amateur and professional photographers at this site should more often score below 7 than above it? Surely they are better than that.

1 + 10 = 11 /2 = 5.5

5.5 would be average score :-)

I like it = 6-9
Don't like it = 2-4
Offensive = 1
Masterpiece = 10
Belongs to a family album (not in public challenge) = 2-5
Black and whites with good tonal range = extra one point

Your comparisons of dpc scores and school grades in this post and your earlier one are not valid. We are not all failing. To compare them you would need to equate the numbers something roughly like this:
8.0 thru 10.0 is an A
6.0 thru 7.99 is a B
4.0 thru 5.99 is a C
2.0 thru 3.99 is a D, and
anything below 2 is a failure.
Just like students, our grades tend to cluster around the mid point with only a few that stray far enough to be an A or a F.

Perhaps because of the written rule, "Users should rate each and every photograph in the challenge on a scale of 1 to 10 (with "1" being a "bad" photo and a "10" being a "good" photo)." If 6 were a failing grade, then why would we need a scale that goes down to 1?

School test scores can always be graded on the curve.
