hahaha. I'm sure it happens, but I don't like the blanket assumption that a mediocre photographer cannot be an excellent critic. I have had wonderful critiques of images from photographers whose work I think is distinctly marginal. I can only presume that such a person will vote as rationally as s/he critiques.

I only enter challenges were I feel that my photo is a 9 or a 10. Why enter if it's not your best? ;o)

Well, in MY case that would be because I'd never have an entry otherwise. Anyway, I enter to be in the game. I don't much care about scores; I just like to have fun.

You never take a photo anymore that you would rate at least a 9? I think your a little too humble. IMO

For the record...if you were refering to me: my statements are only general and I was refering to comparative image quality and not the numbers, however the numbers should be an indicator or a wake-up call to that, taking and not giving atittude.
I see this thread not as a "whose qualified to judge" topic but a discussion as to the degree of judgement. Maybe I'm wrong. |

My current figures are
Votes Cast: 1045
Avg Vote Cast: 6.5445
My voting system is
Poor - 5
Average - 6
Good - 7
Excellent - 8
Inspirational - 9
and those shots that it is impossible to give less than 10 -10
This is just a rough guide for me and as you can see my average vote cast is halfway between average and good.
I feel the numbers dont really matter as long as the system is fair (the same voting method is applied to all photos by the voter)
Just my 2 cents worth!

John, I'm really interested about 1-4's not being in your voting book. You have obviously thought about it, may we ask? For example what happens to Poor+DNMC? Is nothing bad enough to earn 4?
Brett

I do the same, but I'm just learning how to get better, and I love comments Good bad or other wise. But what I think is a good photo vs. do I think it will do well on DPC is a whole other question. Currently I have a photo in a challenge thats doing ok, but I'd be willing to bet 75% of voters have no idea what it is. I personally would give it a 9 I could make it a 10 if it was advanced editing to get rid of a simple flaw. I vote according to the challenge description, technicals, and yes the "cowbell" factor. Do I give out 10's yes, but it has to be perfect, do I give out 1's yes, it has to be pretty bad on all accounts. Brent I have a question, how come its shows on your profile 3 challenges entered and only 2 show up? |

One thing i found is that many finishing at low end of the challenge tend to vote lower also...NOT always...but some-maybe bitter? |

Think about it Quinn. :) There's always a "current" challenge. Before and after the rollover. |

The overall quality of photography on this site is pretty darn impressive, right?
When I see one of those low voters (it seems that most often they are male, had you noticed that?), I can't help but wonder why they think they are God's gift to photography compared to the rest of us around here.
My average votes cast is at 5.57, and I keep reminding myself that that is only average, whilst surely the standard on DPC is higher than that.
Of course it always depends on just exactly who/what we are comparing it to. |

You must be very disapointed by the scores of your two entries.

I was hoping to get above an 8 on my last one, but it was a rushed entry and not as sharp as it could of been.
I was very dissappointed with my free study entry.

Mostly cuz, I sux. Also, when I first started scoring, I really didnt have a pattern, I was one of those "emotional voters", if I liked it, it scored well, period. Now, however, I am begining to look more at the technical aspect of the image. I believe everyone that meets the challenge starts at 5, then, based on technical aspects, appeal of the image and excitement I may get from viewing the image, I go up or down. Example. If its a bird challenge and someone takes a great picture of a whale. Well it doesnt meet the challenge so that drops it to a 3, but technically its beautiful, that bumps it to a 4. If it were a whale challenge, and the same image was submitted it might be a 8 or 9. VERY few images get 10s from me. I am tough, but fair. (now at least, before, I was just a moron) |

4.69 ...I guess I'm medium stingy, though I feel I vote nice? |

above 4.5 is always good, but 3.3 after 5000 plus votes means that you are generally unsatisfied and you think that 70 percent of the images in challenge were either very low quality or DNMC.
