Yeah, it was a stupid me almost like that, voted down for smelling screenshot. I learn not only photography here.

ralphnev, I gave you a nine, which I think was rather generous.
Basically EVERY photo around here has those low scores, no matter how good it is, so you're wasting your energy jumping up and down about it.

What really bugs me is the fact that you complain about those low scores, yet YOU couldn't even be bothered to tick the "helpful" box on all those lovely comments that you got.

uh, dude, you didnt get any 1's.
Sorry to be a bit harsh, but this is tacky. You came in 4th out of almost 300 entries. What's the beef? A top 10 finish still merits notice even tho it's not a ribbon.
Asking people to get a life bc they didnt like you shot is not nice. Do you tell yourself to get a life when you vote a 1, 2, or a 3? If I voted, I would have scored the shot a 4 or 5 bc it doesn't appeal to me & strikes me as a bit boring. But that's me & I certainly have a full life.
I appreciate the creativity you use to make the shot & am grateful that you posted details on how you did it. Not so hot on the title of this thread or the little side comments you made along the way.

edit: I see... your shot is 33rd not the 4th place finish. Still, 33rd aint bad at all. A rather high finish. There are distinct differences between the 2 shots tho. Basically all I wanted to say is be easy. It's a new year. Let's at least begin by trying to be nice & civil to each other.

You know how I feel about this? I think you should never be allowed to enter a challenge again, because I am from now on voting a 1 on every one of your photos because of your rotten attitude. I think you are the most tactless person on this site. How dare you insult people's tastes, the only person you are insulting is yourself by making yourself look like a close-minded idiot and a selfish bastard. I can not stand people that can't believe that there are people out there that don't like their work. And just so you know, your work reflects that. You spend so much time in the "process" of setting up a shot that you forget that what people like is a nice clean and meaningfull shot, not just some high tech set up that no one sees. I wish that people like you with your views on life should be banned from this site, from this world for that matter. We already have a Bush telling us what to think and fear, we don't need another one telling us what to like and dislike.

I think it finished where it deserved to finish. I didn't find it blowing my mind even though it looks cool and you put a lot of effort into it. I gave it what I thought it deserved and so did the other 315 voters. I'd be wrapped to finish where you did!

And I agree with Beetle, you should acknowledge those people who made the effort to comment on your photo and tick those little helpful boxes!

I believe you have made the wrong assumptions. I voted your shot a 3 and this is twice now you have insulted me for my vote - first I am an idiot and now I am making wrong assumptions.

Your shot lacks any real focal point. The pattern is not all that unique. The quality of the photo is not top 10. The subject is very centered, only slightly high in the shot. Your title doesn't fit since motion is not apparent in the shot. I made no incorrect assumptions, did not think it was a screen saver, just a shot that for the challenge, in my opinion, was lacking strength.

You scored a 6.xx and 33rd. What are you whining about? Oh, that's right...us idiots who make wrong assumptions.

ok a more explicit apology

I"M SORRY FOR CALLING ANYBODY NAMES

i had already mentioned that the line was out of line
& whining, no, that was not my intent -
i thought the title of the thread was funny
and would have been more amusing without the "idiot line"

as far as your 'opinion' thankyou
the patterns are unique & are a form of bound chaotic motion given random startng conditions the patterns are not repeatable, though ideal models exist (search on Swinging Spring at google for a nice java applet though watch out for for other Swinging pages ...)
i have tried methods of making it stronger but they tended to destroy or disrupt the pattern - though since then i have thought through other methods .. stay tuned

the reason the image is offset in the frame was i was trying the "optical center"
of displayed art which does not seem to translate to web viewing as opposed to hung art - but it was an experiment

as far as giving people 3's for what is a (IMO) good image that meets the challenge
thats 'ok' as long as you have your 'correct' reasons

Aw, come on, do we have to bring W into this? :)
Although I agree about the high tech set up...I didn't know all that when I voted on yours, ralphnev. Yours scored higher than mine, and (of course) personally, I like mine better. Relax.

Just a reminder to all parties involved - no namecalling and let's keep the politics in the rant sections, please. Thanks.

This is why anonymous voting and stuff is a good idea :-D People will get confrontational and next thing you know...a happy, creative pastime turns into something not so fun :-/

We just taking purty pictures to past time...can't we just leave it at that? :-D

I do appologize that I was that harsh, but I am sooooo sick and tired of people crying about low scores and what they think is wrong with the site and how people vote that perhaps voting is a thing of the past. Why give someone a vote showing how I AND ONLY I feel about the picture if it's not accepted as my opinion and isn't welcomed at all, unless of course I give someone a high score. I get ones on my photos, and twos and threes and so fourth, and every now and then, even tens. I take the good with the bad and am happy that I was even scored, cus that means people saw my photograph. Who am I to tell people not to score low on my photographs. All I am saying is DEAL WITH IT!!!! And if it bothers you that much, stop entering contests. While we're on that, if you don't like this website or its contests, go to another one, we don't need people making everyone mad and frustrated and detering good and honest people from taking part of this.

I cant believe so many people are chastising ralphnev for stating the obvious.

It is very clear that a significant percentage of voters considered his entry as a screensaver. One of them even commented that "now that its been validated, i know its not". It is not surprising that some of those voters would have given it a 1-3 vote assuming its CG and not a photograph.

Isnt a person allowed to rant a little?

I think the problem is that this type of thread is very common and is often posted by photographers who have done fairly well overall. Everyone can relate to and understand the disappointment we feel when a photo scores lower than we had hoped but these threads normally turn into name calling and put downs from both sides. The problem with ranting here is that you are venting your frustration on the very people who voted on your image, thus the very nature of it tells people their opinion is wrong which is insulting in it's own right. If you are disappointed with the way a photo was voted upon it would be better to vent you frustration to your friends and family and then come here and ask the voters if they could please expound upon why they didn't like the photo. I think you'll get a much better response and learn a lot more by asking for further critique rather than just telling everyone (or at least the people that didn't like it) that they are wrong in their opinions.

Coincidence this comes up.
Was playing around with a barcode laser scanner at Staples this past weekend (beats shopping anyday)
and managed this, but wasn't happy enough with the outcome to use it in shapes:

Ahhhh - the days of Spirograph...

& you can see why i went to green
the red just kills ccd's /cmos sensors. always over saturated

it was something neat to try in a darkroom as well
the red laser would take a long time to expose photographic paper
green would burn it in a heart beat ..

I don't think that is an excuse.

Look...I have a degree in advertising, photographed for my college newspaper 2 years, shot posters for Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Daniels Band and John Prine, 13 years as a advertising director with a fortune 500 company, 5 years with a huge media company buying photos and working with photogs, 2 years with a national newspaper as advertising director, and now I work for a photo specialist company and around photogs like national Geographics Bob LLewellyn.

I still get lots of 1's, 2' and 3's and don't get bent for a second..anymore..hehe.

Most of my reasoning is that I still take lazy photos. I still get hung up on an idea I only get, I still take silly snaps of my family, etc, etc...and do weird stuff like my last photo...

I was just taking my tie off after a long day, thought...hmmmm...wrapped it around my head and shot a photo with the auto focus..(didn't even know if I got the photo) Even the title was off the cuff..Who (the rock group Who) is Tommy (Their rock anthem about a deaf, dumb and blind boy)...anyway..you get my point I guess :-D

My point..you never get over human stuff and you will always get suck scores (Unless you are Manny or Heida or other such talent :-P

Sorry for the misunderstanding with that statement, I wasn't trying to say one person has more right to complain than another. When a photo does do relatively well I think these threads sting a lot of people more though because the majority of the people didn't score as high as the photo in question so the OP particularly has comes off as having sour grapes.
