Anyone have recommendations on Web Hosting, or Domain names (who to use)? I have found Cheap-Domain Name registration online (as others), and just wonder about it. I understand that they only register the name. So how come I cannot do this personally?
The web hosting is something else. I already have a site (but could always move it) on my free comcast space. I see that I can have domain name forwarding to it. Just wondering what others are doing/have done/shouldn't do, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Try //symonds.net I have several sites there including //tariquesani.net $96/- for one year hosting and domain name registration. See technical details on site

Disclaimer: mentioning me will not get any better service - they are already great ;)

//www.simply.com

As hub says, "Not necessarily the cheapest (in fact definitely not) but they do seem to be competent and reliable."

It really depends on what you want to use the space for. Without the bells and whistles such as PHP, mySQL databases and the like it can be a lot cheaper, but then most people do offer those these days. It also depends if you want to look for cheap websites of 5 dollars or less a month to expand into 5-15 dollars a month. If you want to use it to be a frontend to show off your photos then your priority should be space and bandwith.

You can register a domain name from a number of registrars and your web hosting with someone else, but then you have to transfer it and that could be more problems than it is worth, to some people. Normally a web host will offer domain registering when you purchase their package, either free, free if annually, or at a low cost.

I recently acquired a webhost and domain name after doing some research looking for my needs - PHP, CGI, mySQL databases etc so that I could run gallery (a free and popular photo gallery), and movable type (a blog writing system). I found and went with total choice hosting and found them to be quick, efficient, and they offer a lot of support. Their plans run at 4-5 dollars a month for a lot of options with 10.95 for domain registration.

As above, I get nothing for mentioning them, I just do so because it's the only host I have any information about and I do find them good. If you have any more questions, tho, feel free to ask.

I use Go Daddy for domain registrations because they're just about the cheapest around and Verve Hosting because they are the best ever. They have a wide variety of packages and they're all pretty affordable and their customer service is undoubtedly the best I've ever seen.

I have used Hurricane Electric for a number of years and have been very happy with their service. They have a low cost hosting option complete with PHP, mySQL database, Perl, and other technical goodies. I recently setup the Gallery software for displaying my photography and it was easy to get everything working correctly.

My site (//www.literalexpressions.com) is being hosted by iPowerweb (//www.ipowerweb.com). After days of research on the internet, I finally chose iPower based on price and a potential need to expand my site's capabilitis in the future. I haven't had to request support yet, but account setup was really quick, and I was able to access my new site's parking page within a couple of days. I can't say that I've had any problems at all with iPower - my site is always accessible.

I've found GANDI to be very affordable (12 euros) and competent. Furthermore, their policies are some of the best among registrars. I think you'll always find a problem with most registrars in terms of "social engineering" issues, but some are still much better than others (GANDI being among them).

I use www.cornerhost.com

It's a small business, and every time I've had a problem (which was always my fault, not theirs) the actual owner of the copany replied to me within 24 hours. I've had a website for almost a year and there has been less than 4 hours of downtime overall.

It is pretty cheap. I pay $10 us a month and get 100 megs of space. I also added a mySQL database for the year for $30 more. They have a $5 a month plan, but its only 25 mb. Also you get a couple of months free if you sign up for a year. I think altogether I paid about $125 for my site. ($100 for hosting and around $25 for the domain registration through another site)

I would suggest them to anyone. Cheap and great customer service.

hostroute.co.uk seem to work - although they don't seem to sell the incredibly cheap hosting I have any more. They've got servers on both sides of the atlantic I think, too...
