Well, i didnt want to hijack the other thread, so i figured i'd start my own :)

I've been looking for a flash for a while, and many models have popped up, either here or an dpreview.. but i'm still not sure which flash to get.

Does anyone have examples of pictures taken with a flash unit with the f717? I heard a bit about the sunpack 383 (i think?) but i priced that one in town and it was 200$ (canadian), it's not a bad price, but was looking for other options. I'm basically looking for something that does nice natural indoor shots (so i'm imaginign something like a diffuser (or whatever they're called) on a flash tilted at 45 degrees), which means i'd need a flash that tilts.. i'd been using my dad's old minolta flash to get more power than my onboard flash, but it's very restrictive..

anywhere i go, i dont hear many good things about sony's old flash unit, but they just came out with a new one.. f32x or something like that.. does it work with the f717? still, it must be pretty pricey..(looking at sony.com..) yep.. 200 US.. so thats almost 300 canadian.. doh.. i've paid so much for accessories up to now, i'm basically just lookign for something not too expesive, but decent, doesn't need to be perfect, or have fancy features.. just something better than the camera's flash, and that can be tilted basically :) i'd love to hear what you guys have, and to know if you like it..

thanks!

I have a 717 as well, and I'd like to hear what people are using for flash.

I use the PROMASTER FTD 5750 FLASH UNIT F/DIGITAL 9887PRO with the PROMASTER DX SONY MODULE 5550/5750 9908PRO. The flash unit can be used on different cameras, that's why you need the Sony module, so you can use it on the Sony.

I like the flash a lot. The specs on it says it is powerful enough to take a flash picture at 93 feet in a manual mode. I've never tried that, but I did a wedding with it and the pictures turned out pretty good, even though it was the first and only time I used the flash so far.

It has a normal, wide angle, and telephoto setting on it. It also comes with an extra diffuser for super wide angle. It also swivels vertically and horizontally, so if you are taking a photo in portrait mode, you can still bounce off the ceiling if you want to.

I paid $226.36 USD which included tax and shipping. I bought mine online at online@precision-camera.com. It's still the same price, $129 for the flash and $69 for the module. The module mounts to the shoe on the camera and the flash mounts on the module.

thanks goodtempo... a wedding is exactly the reason i'm looking for a flash.. I'm not charging much for the wedding though, and it just might cover the cost of the flash, depending on how many prints they get.. I was supprised to get asked in the first place, but i figure i can use this as an oppertunity to practice a bit more. I've already "unofficially" done a wedding, my cousin's.. they had a photographer there and all, but i wanted to try myself at taking lots of pics of it myself, and they turned out supprisingly well. It's kinda how i got the request to do this wedding in the first place.

your flash sounds great, but might be a bit rich for my blood, seeing as how i'd have to pay with canadian money :)

I just received the Sunpak 383 Super from B&H. Bought it for $70 + $4.95 shipping, and I received in in 3 days, New York to Alaska. I was impressed!

I'm still learning how to use it, and am currently shooting a series that will document the carving of a totem pole where I work. I've had some good results so far, but I haven't put anything up on the Internet yet. If you got to the Sony Talk Forum at www.dpreview.com, and search for any of Yehuda Katz's portraits, they were all taken with the Sunpak, and are really nice looking.
