I didnt get to comment on this topic yesterday since the thread got locked so i'll do it here. I attemted to do this photo myself for the Deja Vu challenge and I had no idea how to perform the shot. I tried to use the same exact settings and setup but since it would be my photo I wanted it to look different. I even made the title different. I think that he could have at least gave credit or at least not copied the title. I mean how hard is it to come up with a title?

Im there too it's similar to DPC but offers other things too.. I don't really enter so many challenges there, I think I done 4 or 5 but I do have a group and upload to my gallery.. Im a member at loads of places and even have 1 of my own HERE.

No big deal when I see other members i recognise, in fact, I LOVE IT!

From looking at challenge results, the Icelanders don't seem to have a powerful presence there... yet. Maybe it is time to look around.

Holy moly! That IS similar! Except, they give medals and not ribbons :)

Did anyone notice the recent photography contests? LOL

Oh well, you can't fault them for having the same ideas at the same time right?

:)

On another note, those medals are awfully shiny :) LOL only 26 entries in the last challenge too

Indeed! They seem to have a bit of a different philosophy there. They seem to have more challenges with fewer entries per challenge. Does this make it easier to win one of the shiny things?

I actually dont enter into their main contests often. Only if I happen to shoot something that fits. I never shoot specifically with eyefetch in mind. I play more in the side group contests where many do not have a time restriction on when your photo was taken. At the moment i think I have 12 or so images submitted in various group contests.

And when it comes to comments I do them all here. I vote in most of the contests I enter there but I dont rate other images. I dont much care for that aspect of the site.

I guess I won't be doing much at the other site. My company network has that one blocked. I'm just very glad that DPC is still on the OK list.

Truth is this is society as we have created it...at least in the U.S. Someone has a really good idea, others watch for hints of success, success confirmed, and it's "Send in the clones!"

Ever heard of Wal-Mart? Mr. Sam had a good idea, then came Mr. K. with K-Mart, and Target, Goody's, Dollar General, ad infinitum.

How about McDonald's? Then came Burger King, Hardee's Wendy's, Arby's...

Bottom Line: We are a world full of lemmings who demand that everyone follow the Lemming Religion. Any non-conformists, like me, are hunted down by the Lemming PC Police and "brow-beaten" until we learn the wisdom of...conforming. Marx & Lenin would be proud of how their ideas became a world-wide standard "without firing a shot."

The ancient wise man, King Solomon, put it best, "There is nothing new under the sun!"

If DPC is truly the best website of its kind (I personally believe that it is,) then it will always come out on top! Men don't worry about competition, They pray for it to come!

I think that is why you are using a Pentax K10D.

The point that keeps getting lost.. either through sarcasm, or anger, or blindness... or whatever keeps obfuscating it, is this:

There are 3 photos by a person that are not only copies.. which people do.. but they are almost, pixel by pixel, complete photocopies (mind the pun.) Including composition, lighting, models, and .. most importantly.. titles.

No effort was made to change much of anything at all. Is this *stealing*? No.. not by any true definition. Enough leeway was made to keep it out of the realm of true theft.

However, these photos, when compared with the originals, and given the fact that exact titles were also used, leaves a little bit of a foul taste in my mouth.

However, this is something the photographer has decided they can live with, and, as many others have pointed out, that they can live with defending. That's their choice. Personally, I think it's shameful.

Hypothetical: I write a book. Let's say it's about a boy named Tom.. Sawyer. Set in the 1800s. Does some things like getting out of chores, sneaking into caves, being a general pain in the ass.. has adventures. I shall title this book... The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. A book very much .. indeed almost identical.. to a book written by one Mark Twain. Only maybe my Tom is a year older than Twain's Tom. That makes it different. Now I set out to publish this book, and.. what's this? I can't? But it's different.. *I* wrote it. It's *my* effort. I even changed the age of the main character!

You think any publisher is going to touch that with a ten foot pole?

However, if I wrote a book about a young boy named Tim Saver.. set in the Northwest, that had adventures similar to young Tom, but different.. and titled it something else.. Tim Saver and the Magic Cave.. or something... well, I took an idea and made it my own.

See the difference?

Probably not.

In the end, you have to decide for yourself what you can live with defending.

You've got to be kidding me. He didn't sell any of the photos in question so your book example makes zero sense. Fact is MANY here are just as guilty of the exact same thing that Rikki did. You can look no further than this thread that shows one of many examples of that happening here at DPC. Funny when I asked why there wasn't outrage over that other DPCer doing the same not one person said a word. Perhaps because the REAL issue here has nothing to do with copying ideas and everything to do about harassing Rikki. Seems to me Rikki is getting the last laugh in all of this. When he got banned it was like a spotlight cast upon the rest of us and what is showing ain't pretty.

Edited for clarity.

You're right. Life is full of choices. Just sad that people "choose" to pick on JUST the defenseless.

The original topic of this thread was about a site that was similar to DPC. Somehow we've veered a bit off-topic and are talking about a specific user of that site.

While wandering discussion isn't necessarily bad, we've received numerous reports of "vigilante justice" -- both public and personal harassment of a particular person.

Just a reminder: cyberstalking is not cool.
