Ok, so I got the infamous "ERR 99" tonight. :( PLEASE HELP!
So, the story:
My camera has been kind of funky lately. The shutter noise was weird, and it would be "busy" for a minute at a time, so I was going to take it in after the holidays. Then tonight, after I attached the macro fisheye adapter lens thing my wonderful sister got me for christmas it took 2 photos and then said "ERR 99". Bugger. I turned it off, took out the battery, card, took off lens, re-put back everything etc....I did it all. Still, nothing. It won't do a dang thing but read "ERR 99".

Can someone PLEASE help me. :(

looked it up, supposed to be a lens mismatch error. ??? others said they just turned everything off and on and it worked again. Did you try changing lenses? or removing the adapter?

Yeah, I googled it, and followed the steps people gave that's suppose to fix it or whatever. But nothing. I've tried everything I've found, and the stupid thing still won't work.

I don't wanna screw anything up there- what's the best/carefullest way?

(BTW, thank you for your help!)

oops, got distracted.

dunno, I think there are gold contacts on the business end of the lens, and on a corresponding spot on the body, you should just be able to rub them with a lens cleaning cloth first. If there seems to be something on there, you might try some lens cleaning solution, being careful not to get any inside the cam of course.

If it's not that, I'd wager you need to take your camera in for repair.

also, have you tried a different memory card, reading further on Google, it seems to give that error for a lot of things doesn't it?

Tried a differnt card as well. I'll try cleaning the contacts, maybe that'll do it. Thanks again!

I had the exact problem tonight on my 20D.

I was getting set up to take a photo of our x-mas tree. I put my 19-35mm lens on and put on my external flash. Took a few test shots, then I got the Err99. Removed batteries, CF card and lens. put them all back took a shot and Err99. This happend 3 times. I took my external flash off, put a different lens on and was going to use the on board flash and it said "Busy". followed stame steps above and still acting up. then it finally started working. I put my Sigma macro ring flash on and it worked well also.

This was the first time I got the Err99 on the 20D.

I have experienced the problem you are referring to and found that in my case all I had to do was clean the contacts on bothe the lens and camera and that solved my problem.

Got the error the other day (20D). I was shooting while panning very fast, and after a few shots I got the error. Shut the camera down. Remove the battery. Wait a couple of seconds. Put it back in. Switch it on. And it worked. Haven't seen the error since - or attempted to do the high-speed panning again... :-)

Btw, my camera manual says that this may occur if you use a non-Canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly. I use only Canon lenses.

I get this occasionally with the 100-400 'L' IS attached. I think its when the battery is running low.

However, have you put the original lens back on and then tried a test shot or two. The adapters sometimes cause the err-99

I had the dreaded Err99 on my camera after about three days. It wasn't the lens, rather, I believe, it was the shutter having failed. The camera wouldn't boot up properly with any or no lens attached. Indeed, at switch-on, the shutter gave a small click and nothing more happened. Fortunately, the chain from which I bought it replaced it immediately. I believe that Err99 is a bit of a catch-all error and incudes shutter failure. I hate to be the bearer of bad news and hope that I'm wrong, but, considering that you said that the shutter has been weird noises, I think that your shutter mechanism has packed up. As I said, I hope that I'm wrong and everything returns to normal. Good luck.
