Ok, I made a fool out of myself -- it won't be the last time, I'm sure! As I was looking at PhotoSIG this week, a shot jumped out at me of a jet at an airshow. I was 150% sure that a different crop of the same shot had been posted as an entry here.

So I made myself out to be an "expert" on Diversq's winning shot, making a note of the type of aircraft, as well as the airshow and camera he used for it, based on the details posted on the SIG shot.

But it turns out that the PhotoSIG shot WASN'T his at all! Look at how similar these shots are -- I thought this was a remarkable coincidence:

Anyway, I'll go crawl back into my hole now... :)

Congrats to Diversq on an awesome winning shot!

Its the same plane tho, the dents one the shiney metal bit are the same. With a little bit of a skew and rotate it put diversq's image almost exactly over the top of that photosig one.

Would any of the kind PhotoSig members like to invite a fellow DPC'r to have a Basic Membership at photoSig? I;m not sure what that means but I couldn't view the shot without one... Thanks :)

Please mail a Basic Membership Secret Decoder Code to myqyl@socal.rr.com

Basic membership is free isn't it?

I was under the impression that they recently changed this so that anyone could create a basic membership. Maybe I'm wrong. The guy running that site has his head stuck up his ass.

I'm not sure... It says something about a "Limited Membership" being free, or a current member can generate a code for a "Basic Membership"... It seems too complicated for my poor 7:30 in the AM brain to deal with :)

Ben, that's a really cool comparison!

That's the great thing about aerodynamics! If that vapor was coming off that F-16 any differently there might be something wrong with the aircraft. Anyway I have taken pictures of planes before and this is one of the best and most popular angles to take.

look at the marking on the left wing on the bottom shot...
now look at the same spot on the DPC print

Its undoubtly the same plane or least from the same squadron. The Air Force has demonstration teams that fly from air show to air show. This is one of those teams.

Yeh i'm pretty sure theyre 2 different photos. the sig one looks to have been taken further to the right of the dpc one. The angle of the back tail stick-up thing (i'm not good with planes hehe) is definatly different.

I don't want anyone to think I am accusing anyone of anything here at all... I have no doubt that these are 2 photos of the same thing. Just noting a coincidence, that's all :) By the way, Ben, I do believe that "tail stick-up thing" is actually the technical term.

I gave the DPC one a 10, and I must give the PhotoSig one a 10 too. This is an amazing coincidence.

I didn't think you were. I was just backing you and Ben up. I can tell they're different photos.

In defence of Diversq:

By copying both planes/pictures into different layers in PS you can superimpose one over the other. If you decrease the opacity it helps you to get a "best fit". Then increase the opacity again. If you switch between layers by turning the top layer on and off you can see the obvious differences in images. Aside from these obvious differences you can see some scaling differences such as the afterburner being a little longer on one and the tails being shaped/turned slightly differently. But the angle and perspective are still uncanny. It just blows me away. Has anyone else tried this in PhotoShop? I guess I got too much time on my hands.

I have done this with a different photo before. Turned one of them 'see through' and placed it on top of the other to see if they were the same. Turned out to just be a same place same time shot.

Due to the height of the plane and the angle(s) that the shot(s) would have been taken at, it is quite concievable that they could have been taken with a couple seconds of each other and by two photographers within 20 or 30 feet of each other, and still look remarkably the same.

There is an easy way to test the origination of these images using 'stereo pairing' technique.

Place the top plane on the left next to the bottom plane, approx 1 inch apart and perfectly in line with each other (same height). Then 'cross' or defocus your eyes to blend the images into one (similar to a stereogram - but if you have a stigmatism you won't be able to do this).

The combined image will produce a 'genuine' 3D plane since the photographers were placed just far enough apart to give the binocular effect to the object.

You should have seen it. I was like holy @#$# someone stole my shot. But then i remembered standing about 15 feet away from another long-lenser and figured it had to be him. Whats the chance of that. Check out my other airshow shots he has 2 others that are very similar.
