Never seem to have that problem myself, but I only run Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver MX, Microsoft Word and Flash MX while playing MP3's and chatting on Yahoo. Maybe I'm not putting enough strain on it.

If that is all you do, stick with your PC. Try opening 20 48Mb TIFF files in PS simultaneously while playing MP3s, burning a DVD and printing a 480Mb file to an Epson printer. Guaranteed to crash your PC or at least lock a few of the programs that are trying to run. Doesn't even put a strain on my 1 1/2 year old Mac. The music never skips a beat.

How much RAM do you have in this wonder Machine?

3.5

Wonder Machine? It's just an ordinary Mac. I was running 2.5 of the same speed and brand RAM in my best PC and it crashed every other time I printed a 1/2 gig file without doing anything else.

For those who are following along ...

I've re-imaged the machine. Feels pure as the driven snow, smooth as a baby's ass (but I digress) ... to paraphrase a Harry Chapin song (I Wanna Learn a Love Song, I think), "I got up, I've never felt so clean..."

Now to dirty it up with apps!

... the authors and distributors of spyware, viruses, worms and such.

I am concluding I'm going to have to rebuild my entire system because it's been infected. This is a 2-3 day process for me because of the software I have to reload.

By way of context, I am VERY VERY carefull, my wife says paranoid. I run 2 firewalls (1 hardware (Netgear) and 1 software (ISS, formerly Black Ice)), 4 anti-spyware products (SpywareBlaster, Spybot, Adaware and the MS anti-spyware beta), 2 antivirus engines (Norton and AVG). I don't click on links people send me, I don't accept Instant messaging links or files, I don't visit "those kind of sites" (and you know what I mean) where it's difficult to practice safe computing. And still, my PC has been infected. And with all that software, after 2 days of trying, I can't disinfect it! Dell tech support is empathetic but unable to help.

With a Billion (or more) people on the planet using PCs and the Internet, you'd think that our colective will could hunt down the bastards who write and distribute this stuff. Once found we ought to be able to tear strips of flesh from their bodies. We ought to be able to drip acid into their eyes. We ought to be able infect them with all the new diseases we see advertised on TV. We ought to be able to suspend their reproductive rights (Not to mention their abilities). We ought to sentence them to life in prison with only Reality TV for entertainment. If they happen to be photographers, we ought to limit them to 1 Megapixel cameras and smear orange marmalaid and sand on their lenses and controls.

What other suggestions do you have.

ARGH!

Sorry to ramble. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I think some of those programs also create conflicts which allow stuff to get through. Kinda like when 2 people go for the same ball in volleyball.... "I thought you were going to get it...."

Definitely get rid of Norton. It's junk. It's worse than junk. My sister and I dealt with a self-replicating virus into the wee hours of the morning (she's a comp. sci. graduate) and when it was all cleaned up, we discovered that it was at least 8 months old. She had properly updated and paid for her Norton subscription. What a joke. We compressed the virus (on my pocket pc - tee hee) and emailed it to Norton with a description of the virus and a link to how to fix it. They never said boo back.

Didn't feel like re-infecting the computer just to see if it worked.

Norton further slows boot time (most particularly in SP2) a lot.

I also got 3 trojans through Norton within 3 months of buying a new computer. Yay.

Anyhow, it's good that you use AVG instead, (I use Avast) but you should get rid of norton. It is probably the presence of norton that restricted the real Anti-virus program.

Further, only 1 is really needed of each time. Most people use Spybot and Zone Alarm with AVG or Avast.

I've been whistle-clean since I switched (any my boot time improved a LOT). And I use IE. (Mozilla has conflicts with Tablet PC operations. I often get 70-80MB of memory usage with just one page of yahoo email - YAK)

However, it's not fun to have to go through all that hassle. Drove me nuts.

Keep it simple.

I just wish Apple made a Tablet. That would be sweEEEET. And more than I can afford :(

first of all it is so wrong to run two AVs at the same time.. pick one and use it..

Norton sucks.. AVG is moderate.. I'd suggest Kaspersky, NOD32 or McAfee
(personally I use free AVAST).

disinfection should be done in Safe Mode and with automatic backup OFF

AdAware, Spybot and Spywareblaster are run on weekly basis..

then there is the "hijackthis" tool.. extremelly usefull.. download and analysis of its log file here: //www.hijackthis.de/
it can unhook many trojans/worms from registry and startup.

of course as its been said UPDATE often..

online scanning susp. files: //virusscan.jotti.org/ withs lots of AVs

well.. that's my opinion (and Klint Istwood said a thing about opinions.. :P)

nikant
virus collector since 1995, about 25000 infected files on hardisk (oh come on.. other people collect stamps, coins, bottles.. :P)

I've been there. And after much frustration, my approach now is;

- Forget about anti-virus software! By the time it's updated with new virus signatures you've already been infected.

- Expect that once every few months one of the following will happen to your PC; Hard disk failure, virus infection, driver file or other OS problem or a bad windows update that screws up your system

- Get Drive Image and make an image of a good clean OS installation with patches that you know work, and with all your main apps installed.

- Next time you need to rebuild, just start up Drive Image and restore the image file. Takes about 10-20 minutes.

Jhonan. I got 3 trojans in 3 months of casual internet use and full-time connection via wireless adsl. Through Norton.

Yes, it's junk, but it does keep some stuff out.

I ran for a little while undefended, but really felt it was dangerous as I was occasionally getting hit and my sister's computer was getting hammered on. (13 trojans in 1 month)

On the other hand, Avast is free, easy to use, runs quickly with little system resource hogging. I haven't had so much of a peep from virus type activity since and I don't use anything for spyware. My computer runs fine. I also use IE which is inviting disaster.

This free program that is Avast gives me a sense of security and has so far prevented any sort of mucking about with viruses at all, even if it only does take 10-20 minutes. I lose nothing by being secure (relatively).

I also got a bad windows update, just a few days ago, but they sent out a second one 12 hours later.

Avast updates daily. That's pretty good for keeping update.

The last time I visited a hacker's website, they were updating their exploits lists every 12 hours. I can live with those odds.

ROFLMAO :o) I have never used ANY antivirurs, spyware, adaware or any other kind of "protection" for my computer, I browse all sites i can find, I am never careful, though I do not open zip files I get in my email.

I have NEVER had a viral problem, at least not in my computer, and that is not because I'm so careful.. just wise ;) I have a Mac :)
