I'd go with the 20D option because I don't like the feel of the XT..too small in the hand...so my 2 cents is go out and hold them..for me this is a big factor...

I believe the answer depends on what you are going to be shooting. The 70-200 2.8L is an amazing lens, but when you consider the 1.6X crop on these two cameras it is quite long. Understanding your photographic goals might help with a recommendation.

I wonder if you could wait?

This could serve two purposes. One, you might be able to save up enough to have your cake and eat it too. (20d + 70-200 2.8L)

As mentioned earlier there is a BIG camera show that is known as a time to expect new camera releases. Many people are expecting the 18 month cycle to bring a new generation in the 20D area.

I would wait until the end of February if I were you (unless you can already find a really good deal on a 2nd hand option for either). Actually, that is precisely what I am doing. I have a line on a 70-200 2.8L 2nd hand already and will get whatever body suits my budget around the end of February. I know it's a bit silly to have an L lens with no body but....

The benefits are two-fold:

1 - new technology gives another option
2 - new technology pushes prices in stores and the second hand market down as well as increasing availability of second hand product (advantaging the buyer).

A third benefit could be the possibility to do more research into exactly what is desired (I've changed my lens list 3 times) and increase the likelihood of finding a good deal on something second hand.

Even found a really nice 100mm f2.8 macro lens for half of retail 2nd hand (passed on it but it shows the potential) just two nights ago.

If you can wait, you might find it wise.

I also bought my lens first, I bought a canon 70-200 2.8L (which came with the collar, hood, caps, and even a hard case, as it was an older model....). I had this for about 3 weeks before I decided on the 20d over the 10d

EDIT: originally wrote 300d instead of 10d.

I could wait but.....

1. Canon currently has a excalating rebate program going on until January 15.

2. Costco currently has the 20D available, and come February they may not have the 20D or it's replacement for that matter. I am trying to make my major purchases from Costco when possible.
(Note: Costco.com has a 100% guarantee on all of their merchandise, with few exceptions - If I am not completely satisfied, now or in the future, with my purchase they will provide a complete refund, including shipping and handling fees).

Would the Sigma 70-200 (APO F2.8 EX DG HSM) be that much of a drop off from the Canon version? Does anyone know of a non-biased comprehensive review comparing the two?
