Ok, this is the deal.
I am asked to make photographs of a musical,
from a local elementary school. I have 3 lenses, and no extra flash
except from my 350d build-in. I was told their will be minimum lights (only faced to stage I guess) and that I could use my flash if I
wanted. What's the best thing to do? And how far will my build-in flash reach..?
I guess it will be from a 5 to 6mtr distance, maybe closer.

These lenses I have
75-300
18-55
50mm f/1.8 II

Please, could anyone give me wise advise!
Thanks in advance!

Sander

What are the maximum apertures for the 75-300?

50mm f/1.8 II is probably going to be your best choice though. High ISO, no flash, aperture wide open.

BTW, your on boeard flash isn't gonna hit more than 10-15 feet, so if you are going to use flash, you'll have to be right at the stage.

The BEST advice would be to rent a speedlight for the night of the performance. Many camera stores have units available for rent.

f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM for the 75-300.

Bear_Music, I'm totally out of money so I don't think I can rent one :-(

I'd go for the 50mm, go wide open and get as close to the stage as you can. You have a 350, so you can bump your iso up and not run into to much noise problems. Personally, I'm anti-flash when it comes to performance because it can be distracting and potentially dangerous to the performers. Have fun, and if you can get in earlier and run some test shots (with the lights as they will be for the performance) even better.

I totally agree with Pidge on this, I'm anti-flash for the same reasons and also that you just lose the ambience of the setting. Just run the aperture wide open at high ISO with the 50mm, you'll be fine. Don't forget to custom WB :-)

As Kiyoko said, try and get in early and run some test shots. Dont think the on-board flash will help you very much. Use iso 800/1600 as the 350d is pretty clean on these settings, but be careful about using your 50mm lens wide open - f1.8 will give you a very shallow dof, try some shots with the 18-50 and the 75-300. Dont forget to adjust the white balance to suit the lighting.

Enjoy!

Here's the thing, you shouldn't use a flash at all during the production. that is a huge no no, even if they say it's ok. It's extremely distracting for the actors and can mess them up or blind them and it's disracting for the audiance.
There are several things you can do:

-Shoot pictures of them "performing" before the actual performance where they can pose or you can have the house lights on. This is how they typically get photos of a performance for adverising it.
-During the performance, shoot at 1600 ISO and use a tripod. Have the lense as wide open as possible and shoot at 50 or 60 shutter speed. This would be best. I've shot performances before and it works. Also, if you can, shoot RAW format and you can have further control over the exposure in photoshop later.

But what ever you do, don't use a flash or you could ruin the show (for as close as you'd have to be for the flashes to be effective.

Good luck!

I shoot a lot of dance performance ...
1600 on most stages will get you 3.5 at 125 or something like that. You will be in the ballpark.

dont go flash unless you HAVE TO

Thanks for the help guys
I think I can do something with this information! I thought so that
flash wouldn't be the best solution. I'll try to get their before the show, but the show allready starts at 5pm. But I will see, I will show some photos afterwards!!

Again, big thanks!

For the record, Low brought up flash and I was "assuming" these putative flash pictures would be setups, not during the actual performance. I quite agree that using flash during the performance is bad. That said, I bet there will be LOTS of little P&S parent-cams flashing away :-) There usually are...
