I'm going to be in Tasmania next year for university. Everything is pretty much done, but I'm stuck on accomodation. I'm not asking for an accomodation. It's just that I've been offered it by the university and I'm very confused on its words. More like payment options. It says "payment frequency", which I'm assuming is payment options.

So here are the options: Upfront, Direct debit fortnightly, fornightly other. If I pay upfront it's much cheaper. What on earth is a fornightly!? Well, if I see a bunch of black and white text I'm already out of my element.

fortnightly = every 2 weeks
there are 52 weeks a year
there are 26 fortnights a year (as in fourteen nights)
there are 12 months a year

I think up front means you pay the whole year before you start
a good option if you like the accomdation... not so good if you don't like and want to move in with friends you meet at uni after a few months

Oh, that what it means? Darn, why do have to combine many words into one.

Thank you very much Firsty! Really appreciate it.

Hehehe....I got laughed at the other week by using the word fortnight!

So it sounds like fortnight isn't a common word. Oh Makka, do you know much about Tasmania, specifically Launceston?

I think the term fortnightly is better known as bi-monthly in the US.

Lucky you, Tassie is the one state I wanted to go to for a long time. I just can't convince my wife she thinks it's too cold.

Everyone I know who goes to Tassie love the place and by all reports it is a fantastic destination for photographers.

Enjoy your stay.

I'll certainly enjoy my stay. A nice 3 and a half years. I looking to do a bunch of trekking/hiking and mountain biking.

tassie is a beautiful place. Really pretty, lots of photo ops there. My brother lives in Mt Pleasant (not far from Launceston) You will love it

My sister and her family were raised in Launceston, and I've visted the place 11 times and the weather there reminds me very much of Seattle, except it maybe a little cooler than it is here in the Summer.

You can go skiing in the winters there at Ben Lomond if you wanted to, in the mountains outside Launceston or Lonnceston as the locals pronounce it. Folks are pretty friendly there.

Are you from Thailand? It will be quite a different change for you weather wise to begin with.

Did anyone catch the documentary on Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis on the ABC last Sunday night?

Two very accomplished photographers whose work centered around the Tasmanian wilderness. Was interesting viewing.

cheers,
bazz.

I'm half Thai. So... half of me is from there. Although I'm currently living here. At least I heard Launceston is warmer than Great Yarmouth in the winter.

Tassie is apparently beautiful - never got the chance to go there myself - there aren't a whole lot of people, but there's a lot of beautiful stuff.

All the best!

No I don't sorry...I'm on the other side of Australia in Perth. I know many people who have been there though and the landscape is supposed to be stunning!

Fornightly is a very common word here is Australia. And Tasmania is a beautiful place. My husband and I and few friends went there about 7 years ago (before kids!) and had the most wonderful time. The best place we visited was Cradle Mountain. Cradle Mountain Lodge was amazing, a rustic log cabin on the outside but stunning on the inside with log fires in winter (when we went) and the photos we took of Cradle Mountain were postcard perfect! I think you will have a great time!

When I was there I went to Port Arthur (main tourist attraction) and the zoo in Hobart, though small is quite nice. I got to hold a baby wombat and tasmanian devil. I was only in Taz for 3 days.

That whole area is just amazing. Lot of hiking - even smaller ones - and some great photo spots. Never did get a clear pic of dove lake but hey, it's cloudy most of the year and I was only in that area for a few weeks :-)

Well, you've had fortnight explained already. In case you weren't sure, "direct debit" means automatically transferred from a bank account. They might offer that a little cheaper because they know it doesn't depend on you remembering to pay it.

Anyway - have fun in Tassie. I live in Victoria, the state just above Tassy on the mainland. Interestingly - you've other post about armpit-hair (and other hair) is quite appropriate for Tassy... You'll find more than a few unshaved hippy-like people who are very passionate about the Tasmanian rain forests (which get logged for wood chips and timber). Anyway though, you'll learn all about the culture when you arrive in a couple of months time.

Cheers,

Mark.
