I'm looking for some extra feedback on this image if anyone's got any to give.

A score in the fives is respectable, I know, but I'd seen a general increase in my scores lately. I was really looking forward to this one being marked as I was very impressed with the result. I only got a few comments and most of them seemed predominantly complimentary. So what was preventing it from scoring higher than it did?

Faced with the disappointment here and little inspiration for the next challenges I've only just gotten around to uploading something for a challenge again, kind of wondering what the point is if I do something I really like and the response is pretty much the equivalent of a shrug and "that's okay" from the majority of voters.

As I say, I know it isn't a *low* score, but what could I have changed to make it higher? What do people have against this image?

First of all, you scored .7 higher than your average, so I'd say it IS an improvement.

Second, I gave the shot a 6. It is an interesting angle, but the toes have glare, the white background doesn't fit with a "tough" boot and the subject is average to good. Thus my 6.

It isn't a bad picture. However, it isn't a terribly good picture either. Technically, you are not far off, but content-wise, the picture is rather boring. Nothing is happening.

It is as if you cut the picture out of a catalogue that sells boots. No problem there, but catalogues that sell boots aren't too exciting. That's all.

I gave it a 5.

After reading your description of how you took the picture, I can understand why you like it so much - it's a cool way to take it, putting the boot on your arm and using the sky to get the white background... You worked hard at this shot. However, it doesn't *look* to the viewer like anything other than you stepped on a white background, looked down and snapped the picture. Technically very well done, but I agree with the others - just not a terribly exciting subject. Don't give up.

I was thinking about this, but in that time, 2 other people have pretty much given the same opinion as I. Its a cool boot, but for the only subject of a picture, it isn't that compelling of an image. As we generally vote pretty subjectively, it is up to the photogs to provide a subject with substantial *potential* to do well. The really skilled photographers are the ones that take everyday normal things and make great pictures with them. The rest of us mere mortals are still scratching our heads trying to figure out how they thought of it.

Hmm... I saw that myself and saw it as a big plus point. I was impressed that I could come up with something that would be good enough to sit in a catalogue.

I think I'm missing understanding what people are seeing in the higher rated pictures. I mean, people submitted banana pictures that were perfectly nice pictures but they were bananas... I find my boot far more interesting than a banana.

Guess I need to observe some more and consider it further.

Never thought of it like that, actually. I have done quite a bit of product photography, and while it can be tricky to get right sometimes (especially with objects made of chrome or containing mirrors), it isn't exactly a very advanced art.

I guess photorealism (even good photorealism, even though your boot is blurry on its left side, making it a sub-par product shot) is something to strive for, but you will always find that a picture with a strong message and some technical flaws will do better than a flawless picture that tells no story.

You like boots more than bananas. Obviously with like 6 banana entries and 1 or 2 boot entries, dpc went the other way. Shoot flowers, bugs and sunsets if you want score.

But, banana's haven't won ribbons either :P

Dunno. To me "WOW" needs to contain emotion, or include something that the person or object does or is doing.

Just now I was pondering this when I saw your post.
What do I wish to include in my photographs? What could kick them up a knotch? Perhaps showing more than just documenting an item, or a scene, or a person.

I like your image in general.. but .. it has just that.. general impact. I like how you used the sky to make the white background - we all learned something new today :)

Shooting these things doesn't guarantee anything. Methinks I won a challenge without any of them. My flower shots have not done particularly well. They didn't suck, but they weren't that great. Find something different and interesting. It doesn't have to be super colorful or one of a kind. It can be just regular stuff just sitting around the house (or office :) that can pull off winners. Make us see it in a way we haven't before and visually impacting and you are most of the way there.

I've shot all the things Mav listed. They didn't do badly either. Maybe, just maybe, they were at least halfway decent shots and not just bandwagon cliche pics. Anyone can take these shots. The hard part is doing it well enough to win or even score well.
