You know when you use MapQuest and stuff, it'll say how many hours it will take to get to your destination? Well what speed do they consider you going, and do they take into account that you might go through towns with a lot of stoplights? I'm going 787 Miles in 11 hrs and 42 min. How fast does Mapquest think I'll be driving? (all major highway)

they go by the speed limit on the roads i believe, I know the time they set from Flint, Mi to Toronto is correct when going the speed limit.

The average speed you'd be going at 787 miles in 11hr 42min would be 67mph.

That works out to 65 mph, give or take.

So if I have a radar detector, a sports car, and crazy music playing how long do you think I could cut off of those 12 hrs?

Your calculator is broke. :(

I drove from LA to Sacramento a couple years back in about 4 hours. I think the average speed calculation was 96mph. Back when I lived in California, I used di53's method all the and barely took my eyes off the rearview mirror except to occasionally see what was in front of me.

Did I mention I still got LOTS of tickets?

Maybe you use one of those "legally correct" calculators that restricts the result to within the legal speed limit.

Go have a salad. :)

I took my mom to Charlevoix, MI from Jackson, MI yesterday. Mapquest says 4 hrs 8 mins. Took me 3.5 hrs. No traffic, no cops. And oh ... I fly! :)

I drove from Portland, OR to Los Angeles, CA in just over 11 hours. Average speed was something like 87mph. That includes stopping for gas, food and peeing.

I don't drive that fast anymore.
