I noticed tonight that if I look at pictures on the site and I am not logged in as user that I now see Goooogle Ads under the pictures. When logged in I do not see the ads. This something new or am I just not very observant?

I'll be - you're right. But since i am always logged in, i never noticed.

Hmmm...I have no idea if this is new, or gooogle is just taking over the net!

It's new, and in fact looks like it's still being coded into the site.

When all is said and done, my guess is that it will be in place for Guests and possibly for Registered users, but not for Members.

I'm actually somewhat of a fan of Google ads because they are context sensitive (Google serves ads based on the content of the site/page to which they are being served) so they are very likely to be relevant to the viewer, and they are text-based so they load quickly and are not distracting to the viewer.

At this point, though, I don't know any more about this than anyone else.

It's good to see common sense prevailing. This is a great idea IMO, with the increased traffic and apparently neccesary upgrades, D&L need to keep the dough coming in somehow.

I really don't like the ads. A proper classified section wuld be ok IMHO, but the google ads kind of cheapen the site. I think google is great, but not on every page of the internet!

My opinion.

From a webmaster's point of view, google ads offer a great way of at least paying for a site. I've used them for quite a while on almost every site I run or maintain. Not only do they help pay the bills for the site, but they add value in that they are context sensitive and allow your visitors to find other sites they may be interested in.

Edit: Now everyone go to Polished Tool and click ads ... lol

I hate ads with a passion. They are evil and unnecessary and take up way to much bandwidth. If I want to see ads I will turn on my TV or radio.

I do what I can to prevent them from displaying on web sites I visit.

Im just glad Im a paid member and I dont have to see them. But if paid members are ever forced to see them I will probablly leave the DPC community

Yup...ads are bothering, that's for sure, but honestly speaking it's true that they can take benefits to the site...
Fortunately my browser is able to "kill" the ads! :D

I don't mind really, I don't click either.
But it could be a size smaller, and below the news section. (those ads gets your attention eitherway so..)

Downsize them I say :P

I had a few extra domain names lying around. It was the most appropriate of those I had lying around.

<==== a Polished Tool :-)

They may be evil but they can be a sensible way to offset hosting and bandwidth costs. Unless everybody visiting a site is a paying member, they can indeed be necessary.

That said, I certainly think that 3 blocks on the photo page is excessive and doesn't look good - plus I'm not convinced it significantly increases your click-thru rate over a single block placement. And it would be nice to see it drop below the news on the main page.

I logged out just to see what's up with the ads on here. The side bar ads on the frontpage are ok, probably the best placement for them. But I'd have to say someone over did it on the photo pages.

I don't mind the ads... but the placement and overuse of the horizontal banners are both boring and wasteful on the photo pages... perhaps a 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper (to the left) would be better for those pages ... if they are going to be there, let's make sure we get the best value out of them.

BTW, to site maintainers, I find the 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper offers the best per click payoff. When Google serves out image ads at those sizes, you may see dollars instead of cents per click.

Now, to all you that hate ads. Something has to pay the bills for a site like DPC. Ads are an inevitable part of any medium. Without advertising there would be no TV, radio, newspapers, or free web sites that provide quality content.

Registering paid members only goes so far, you gotta pay for the freebies somehow... and you have to have the freebies around, so that you can get people hopelessly addicted, so they will pay.
