Johnny Cash's cover of U2's One I also really like

His version of Tom Petty's Won't back down was pretty good too... I loved Johnny Cash...

I really like when a band takes a song by someone else and REALLY makes it their own and not just a mimic. Here's a few....

Johnny Cash turned out to be a master at this. Not yet mentioned: Rusty Cage, I Hung my Head

PM Dawn: You got me Floatin' (Jimi Hendrox)
Pretenders Bold as Love (Jimi Hendrix)
David Bowie remake of his own Man Who Sold the World

Keep on Rockin in the Free World, by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, covered by Pearl Jam.

Sheryl Crow-Dyer Maker (Zep)
Red Hot Chili Peppers-Higher Ground (S. Wonder)
Cake-I Will Survive
Old And In The Way-Wild Horses(Rolling Stones)
Stevie Ray Vaughn-Voo Doo Child(Slight Return)-JH
The Clash-Pressure Drop
Phish-Gin N Juice (Snoop Dog)

Joe Cocker pretty much rules in this category IMHO...Feelin Alright, With A Little Help From My Friends.

But sometimes other people do your song sooo much better ;)

I had issues with the whole sampling craze, but then I started hearing stuff I really just...LIKED. So I had to stop having issues :)

Hmmm...maybe I'm just old fashioned. I prefer someone to be original to a point. There are so many acts that make a killing by sampling or covering someone elses song and then you never hear from them again. It must be just me being a tight wad! :)

I dunno about old fashioned...think of how many people, historically, have sung the song Amazing Grace? Do you have a favorite version? It's that simple. I don't think you're a tight wad, either, you are absolutely entitled to feeling the way you do! I personally despised all the rap beats that were just stolen from the greats...but then sometimes, one out of a hundred, it just sounds fucking COOL! But ultimately, I just like to see artists riffin' off each other. Nothing is truly original in this world, so we have to make the best of it and try to be as fresh as we can.

Right now, I am listening to Joni Mitchell doing Both Sides Now - but not the oldie/goodie classic version. This one is intensely melancholy (moreso than usual!). It's a newer version, not sure what year, but NEW - and her smokey voice, old and wiser maybe, has really brought the song to its peak. This. This is how the song was meant to be heard. :)

Anyway, sorry to keep talking about this, but I strangely feel strongly about this subject! eheheh :)

That is a damn good cover if I don't say so myself...

Strike me down for forgetting Jimi Hendrixs cover of All Along The Watchtower(has that one been mentioned yet?).

Didn't Celine Dion sing "You shook me all night long" (AC/DC)?

...and didn't it go down in history as one of the "Least Metal Moments" of Rock & Roll? ...come to think of it, didn't I try to rip my ears off when I saw it on VH1? It's right up there with Pat Boone doing "Enter Sandman" *shudders*

OH.MY.GOD. That is...such a...scary...audio...thought...shivvvver.

I still won't forgive her for covering Roy Orbison via Cyndi Lauper on I Drove All Night. She is just so unworthy...

Yes, I believe that was "covered" earlier.

I think All Along The Watchtower is in a close competition with Wild Horses and Rockin' In The Free World for most mentions ... interestingly, I have recordings of (what long ago passed for) my band covering all three of these.

Awesome! And you can get it with "Schoolhouse Rock Rocks" - I learned everything I know from Schoolhouse Rock and Saturday morning cartoons.

Certainly the cover that will stand in music history as one of the best recived would be Joe Cocker's version of the Beatles' With a Little Help from My Friends
