As is recounted in this recent interview with Roger McGuinn, The Byrds' covers of Pete Seeger's Turn, Turn, Turn and Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man were pretty significant.

And now I return for more cover song fanatic fun:

How bout the entire I AM SAM soundtrack? Booyah!

Ever heard of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?? Lordy they rock! Punk covers of all the greats...

What about Seu Jorge? From the Life Aquatic...did all the French versions of Bowie. But Black Box Recorder does the best Rock'n'Roll Suicide.

Oh, but damn, what about Tom Jones Reload album??

Or JOHNNY CASH's The Man Comes Around album?

Ugh, I could go on for days. But I've got finals next week ahaha. ;)

Edit to fix my silly album name mistakes...

Hmmm...

I think my favourite would be Face to Face's rendition of Social Distortion's "Telling Them". And speaking of Social Distortion, they do a pretty good "Ring of Fire". Other favourites:

-Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - Country Roads (John Denver)
-Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - Me & Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Paul Simon)
-Headstones - Tweeter & The Monkey Man (Traveling Wilburys)
-Suicide Machines - What I Like About You (Romantics)
-Suicide Machines - I Don't Wanna Hear It (Minor Threat)
-Pearl Jam - Rockin' in the Free World (Neil Young)
-Face to Face - The KKK Took My Baby Away (Ramones)

I could go on, but I think that's enough for now...

You forgot the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.
Ewan also sings "Under the Sea" in A Life Less Ordinary

Yeesh, I really didn't like Moulin Rouge! And I will forever hate Lady Marmalade because of it...sigh! That song taught me all the French I know!

I'm not really a big fan of cover versions. It's just as bad as bands sampling other's music to make new music! Not my thing!

But sometimes other people do your song sooo much better ;)

I had issues with the whole sampling craze, but then I started hearing stuff I really just...LIKED. So I had to stop having issues :)

Ever so many...

My friend tried to convince me there's a cover of Lennon's Imagine that's good by A Perfect Circle. Simply, there's no such thing as a cover to Lennon's Imagine. It's illegal.

Good covers though:
Jolene by the White Stripes, originally by Dolly Parton
All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix of course, originally Dylan
As Tears Go By by the Stones, originally Marianne Faithful
Ghost of Tom Joad by RATM, originally The Boss
House of the Rising Sun by the Animals, a traditional Folk Song
Mad World by Gary Jules, originally by Tears for Fears.
(edited to add)
Hurt by Johnny Cash, originally by Nine Inch Nails

A few of among many covers that I like.

(edited for misspelling)

Boo-yah! Mad world by Gary Jules is amazing... and I didn't know House of the Rising Sun was a trad folk song?? Wow!

But along those lines...the Blind Boys of Alabama do a version of Amazing Grace set to the tune of House of the Rising Sun. It's tres spectacular!

Hmmm...maybe I'm just old fashioned. I prefer someone to be original to a point. There are so many acts that make a killing by sampling or covering someone elses song and then you never hear from them again. It must be just me being a tight wad! :)
