Ok, now that it's all over, I'd like to share some more outtakes and ask an opinion question...

this is the one i entered, followed by my first run at the post processing... did i pick the right one?

I think you made the right choice Kudzu. The other one doesn't seem all that natural.

To me the first run has a more natural sky colour and more detail in general in the entire image. Each has it's own feel. For DPC I think the first run may have been better accepted.

I also think you made the correct choice. I much prefer your entry to your first run.

I agree, I like the one you entered much better than the other. Your first run seems a little too sharp. It makes the clouds, tree and reflections a littl too unnatural looking for me. I also prefer the colors of your submitted photo.

I really liked the picture of the horse. I'm getting a little tired of trees and clouds, but that's just me. 8)

Of the two choices, I like your submission best. However, I LOVE the horse shot. That is a 12 in my book. :-)

btw... the horse shot is in my portfolio, incase you might, you know, wanna mark it as a favorite or put it on your wish list or something...

Well now that that is overwith here are two of my outtakes that I couldn't decide on using but for various reasons I didn't...probably should have...and the submitted image.

I did however get some good comments (thank you all) and although it didn't do as well as I hoped (they never do) I do like it still.

I'll probably be in the minority again but I prefer the B & W skyline. It just needs a little horizon straightening.

I'll join this thread. I was going to start one anyway. All of these were taken within minutes of one another:

Submitted: ... reasonably happy with the score. And I agree with the comments about including all the spray. Unfortunately that is what I captured.

Outtake 1: ... not submitted because the wife didn't like it and because there is no detail in the sky.

Outtake 2: ... not submitted because the surfer is not sharply focused. I deliberaely used a slower speed to soften the water and spray.

Comments would be welcome.

Thanks I like the b/w too, the horizon looks a little crooked cause of the angle of the shore line but it does look better straightened. The wide angle also screwed with my perspective a little on the sides. Additionally if submitted I would have chosen a tighter crop so more building detail could be seen.

Here is another HUGE file I forgot I had on my webspace and am still fine tuning. //www.sabphotography.com/chicagopano1.jpg From the Aquarium on the left to almost Navy Pier on the right.

I would offer my opinion, but *you* should no longer trust anything *I* say to you in regards to your photos. =)

I like the tighter crop (link) though the shoreline is playing havoc making it look crooked.

I prefer the details and colour (sky particularly) in the second one but I think the first one would score better in a challenge - Depends on the aim really but probably picked the right one.

You bet people dig horses! :-) Sometimes more than other times.

I put up the "before" photo of my entry so that people could see just how messy it was. Dog, fence, unsightly exercise boots, etc. And that the background's tone was already "like that" in the finished product, so I just built on the fantasy-like colors. Cristy (Ristyz) helped me with an edge burning technique.


p.s. kudzu, i love the Ripple shot the most! Way cool.

mental note, updated : chicks who dig horses also dig murky pond water...

Your challenge entry is a very powerful shot and congratulations...however....I'm totally off topic, here, and I apologize...but...aren't those major elements that you removed. Are you allowed to do that? A fence and a dog? Are the rules different for a free study?

Appreciate your thoughts. You know, I didn't think of that for a minute--to me it didn't differ from prior fence removals, including a horse one which top tenned and I submitted the raw original. And got a little bit of comment from some voters that I didn't remove *enough* fence!

The rules say "Cloning, dodging, burning, etc. to improve your photo or remove imperfections or minor distracting elements, etc. is acceptable. However, using any editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph is not permitted."

So I didn't duplicate/create/move anything. The final image is quite cropped so the vertical fence post wasn't part of the shot at all, and of course the crop eliminated almost all of the dog too. The horizontal fence was the big element removed. Some voters think I cropped too closely and reduced the impact of the shot. Part of the close crop was to avoid showing the exercise boots which he had to be turned out with after 5 weeks of being penned in a small space due to suspected fracture! I should have submitted the same crop, instead of showing it uncropped. Guess the best thing would be to post the entry shot for side by side check.

My outtakes - did I do the right thing?

Would have loved to have been able to submit this one, however, the background killed a great foreground. But I did not have control over the venue.



View larger... (can we say cross between Johnny Depp and Jim Carrey's "Lemony Snickets"

But these were the four images I considered for the challenge (the first being the entry), just curious what your thoughts are?
