I recently entered my first challenge submission for Adulthood. I liked the shot but didn't expect much since there were so many other great ones. However, I was shocked to find out how many scores below 5 I recieved. I know I failed to meet the maximum pixel requirement but wow. It just makes me wonder how many people actually vote the way they feel as apposed to voting to make other people's scores decrease.

Personally, when I vote, the minimum score I give is a 5. Even if it's an unbelievably terrible shot, I don't think anyone who takes the time to go out, shoot something and submit it deserves anything less than that for effort.

I'm not asking anyone to agree with the way I vote, I'd just like to hear your feedback. And for the people who vote 1-3 on shots that obviously don't deserve that, I'd love to know why you vote that way.

I just think that everyone has their own justifications whether they be morally right or wrong on how they vote. All of the photos in challenges are subject to all of the same voters and all of it is just part of DPC, unforunately or not.

Just my 2cents.

P.S. your title... just seems very funny out of context :)

because the voting scale goes from 1-10 people will use all these numbers as they see fit.
There are lots of different people on this site and lots of different voting methods.
You just have to learn to take the rough with the smooth, the good with the bad, the.....well, you get the picture, even if my "picture" is only worth a 3 :-)

This has been rehashed soooo many times on this board. Rest assured, there are voter trolls.

People who have a pattern of voting too low have their votes culled, as well as too high, and the 20% rule is always there also.

Some people vote on the average lower across the board, and since they voted low (curve wise) on everyone else too, it evens out.

You finished just shy of 5.1 in your first challenge with an image that used a skewed angle, a major no-no for many DPC voters. There's nothing abnromal about your vote distribution on that workmanlike-but-not-inspired entry. We've seen a lot of better images get more 3's, 2's and 1's than yours did. I wouldn't worry about it.

As for your unwillingness to vote any image under a 5, what's the rest of the scale FOR then? You're basically saying every entry is average-or-better... You're just compressing your scale, making it harder to rank the ones that are close to each other properly.

Well, I gave your shot a six. I liked it overall and thought the sense of perspective was great, but there seemed to be a section on the flank of the car that was blown out (picky, I know), the sky looked a little flat and I didn't really get a great connection with the challenge topic. The latter is one of the criteria that I, personally, tend to mark quite hard upon. Whether that is a good or a bad thing is a matter for almost endless debate.

On a completely different note, I love the lighting in the portraits in your portfolio. Excellent job.

Collin,

Your point is well made. I for one, will never understand how shots like yours can be given a one. On the other hand I also can't understand how your shot could be given so many tens. After all you have left yourself soem scope for improvement. Guess we just have to trust that it does balance out in the end.

Personally I struggle with the fact that even shots that come near the end get soem tens, What I find most difficult are those that get no eights or nines, and still get a ten. I draw my own conclusions, and they are not very flettering.

Keep going for it. You took the first step and submitted - I haven't even got that far.
