I just became a registered member of DPChallenge and want to see what some of you think of one of my photos. Go easy on me, I am 13 and just beginning to learn photography (FYI: I am using a cheap Sony P31 camera). Do you have any tips to improve the photo below?:

Welcome to the site Alissa.

I think the photo is a bit dark in the trees where the subject is and a bit too bright behind it. I take most of my photos between 5pm and 8pm when the light isn't so bright. Also, you can use Photoshop or something to change this into a b/w which may look nice. :)

I think it's a little dark too. The only thing I could suggest would be maybe some fill flash if you can, or a different time of day which someone already mentioned. Very pretty scene though. I think you did a great job of making the verticals vertical.

Welcome Alissa,

Not sure how the multi-pattern metering works on your camera. Maybe changing that or using the selectable Twilight, Twilight Portrait (Slow shutter with Flash) feature to brighten main focal point. However these suggestions will probably wash out (brighten) to much of the sunny area.

I think the better solution is to wait until later in the evening like Mavrik said or start early in the morning. Both times, timimg will be crucial. Not neccesarily here but in general. The window of opportunity runs out fast for the limited feature cameras. Not sure how limited your camera is.

Good luck.

PS. I just found out your dad is casualguy. I'm sure he can also advise you about the feature capablilities of his old camera.

Hi Alissa,

First of all well done on the creative vision!
The photo to me looks too dark and a little busy, try and concentrate on a particular subject rather then trying to include everything into the frame, i.e.; cropping the bottom hedge away.

Be careful of photographing in dark areas especially when you’re shooting towards bright light.

Hi Alissa,
A little dark but the photo layout shows you have a good eye and
a talent that will only improve as time passes. Good luck Kiddo!

Hey,
Yes i agree with everyone else.. its much to dark. But i see that you have good placement. Its well framed. Just make sure to watch little spots of sun light on your main subject. Its kinda distracting to the eye. The back grouns is a bit light in compassison to the foreground.. whi is also a bit distracting. But yes other than that its a great start. I like the photo over all =)

i hope you dont mind, but i played a lil bit with it in PSP, and here's the result:

what i did was duplicate the layer, set it to "soft light" mode, put it to 60% opacity, inverted it, and desaturated it.

I forget where i found this technique, but it's very usefull to "bring back" shadows. We can now see the pretty composition that was going on in there :) further editing might be required at this point, but it already saved what would be a much too dark shot.

geez you guys! If someone took the photos I did in the 9th grade, and responded with this level of suggestions, I might have been intimidated by what makes a good shot.

This is a great shot.. don't worry about any of the photoshop tricks for improving photos. If you just think about composition, the lighting, and the focus, you will keep making great photos--and you can make them out of anything.
(I started taking photos at 13, and I've just returned to it at 26. It's something that always sticks around!)

I don't like the fuzz showing up on the stone bench after refracted's PS editing. I think I prefer lilcasualgirl's version. Keep clicking!

Great photo and composition. Good job lilcasualgirl.
Refracted, You did great, too. I need to upgrade my software...the results are amazing.
LilCasualGurl, that is.
