Here is a self-portrait I took of myself. Any advice on what to do? I already dodged and burned. Anything else that I could do? Self-Portrait

I don't mind blank space however, I would rather you looking into the space instead of being pushed up against the border.

But...it is a self portrait. I may be that you "feel" pushed up against the border in your daily life!

If you keep it the way it is, I would try to "smooth" or darken the "flash" of light in the blank space.

Well, I'll give you what I was going for in this photo. I felt that the blank space left a little bit of drama, which is part of daily life of a teenager. The light in the middle is the spotlight of the drama, from which I'm trying to stay out of.

In the western world, looking left inspires more of a feeling of uneasiness. Actually looking out of the frame I mean.

Looking past the camera makes the viewer feel that the subject is distracted, or has their attention on something.

Negative space does leave drama, but I think there may be a little much or it here, and the pattern on the wall is distracting. Try putting up a simple bedsheet to flatten it, and position yourself a few feet in front to blur it out.

The image appears to be a little soft, can't be sure if this was on purpose or not, but I see it. If you can't spot focus, then focus on your face, then move the camera to the desired framing.

The flashed spot light gives a voyeuristic feel. For a more artful composition(if you so desire), try setting up some side lighting instead. If you don't have something to control the lighting try building some flaps to control the direction of the light and prevent spillage on the background. If you have a 500w halogen work light in the garage, they work great.

Just curious what you think of this... trying to keep "drama" but balance the outward glance at the same time and force your eyes to bounce around the middle of the picture:

I like what you did to this picture. It looks like twins. Just one of her would look good too.

My take on it:

Made it look a little cleaner, but it might not be the effect you were going for in the photo. You might try bouncing light from a desk lamp or something off the ceiling and not use the flash, it seems to work well for lighting. But you do look nice, even with the shiny thing from the flash next to your head :P

If you have the colour version available, there's a lot more flexibility around the conversion to b&w. Photoshop lets you mix the channels to give it quite a different b&w feel.

Sadly, I don't have the color version :-( I had the b&w setting on when I took the picture.

Unreal dwterry,

I don't know if you planted it in my brain but my eyeballs won't stop going from side to side in your remake of Chilibean's portrait...

That's definitely different. I really like what you did with the lighting. I'm not too sure about the lines though.

I like the lines. It's like you are almost behind the miniblinds, hiding but not hiding. Great job Bear!

That was my idea, make it into a "voyeur" shot. Maybe if the lines were a little thicker?
