My camera seem to have a plastic tripod mount. Does these last? Why would they use plastic for something like this? Darn! Anyone with plastic tripod mounts have bad experiences to share? How long do they last with normal use?

Plastic mount and metal screw on head doesn't like the best mix, but as long as you are careful I don't see too much of a problem. You will probably upgrade before the plastic is totally destroyed.

I had a camera with a plastic mount. Once the tripod got knocked over and I was afraid the camera would be smashed. The camera came through fine, but unfortunately, the threads got stripped out. Of course, this would not have been a problem if not for my clumsiness.

okay, so far from the 2 responses, it seems like a bad idea to have a plastic mount. I'm getting paranoid about using it now :(

If you don't use it, you're certainly worse off than if you used it until (if) you ever stripped it out. You might never strip it. Make sure you don't over tighten the (metal) tripod screw, that will greatly reduce the possibility of damaging the threads.

This is good advise, thank you Kirbic. I'll keep that in mind at all times when securing the tripod.

Actually, your BEST bet is to get a tripod with a quick-clamp plate, and keep the plate permanently screwed onto the camera. That's what i did with my Fuji...

Good advice from Mr Bear as always.

I keep plates on my cameras, and they have metal threads....

Right. It's not THAT great an idea to keep screwing anf unscrewing anything, IMO, if it can be avoided. I've popped a metal mount through on a Nikon F2 long ago, with an overlong tripod screw, in the days before quick-release plates were common. My plate lives on my 20D right now, no need to remove it as all the things that opens till open with it on.

now why didnt I think of that? Another great idea, thank you Robt. So I'll have to save some money for a new tripod, and carefully use the current one until I do. Thanks all, very helpful!
