I own a Dell DJ and absolutely love it. I notice no one else had mentioned Dell, but I have had mine for over a year and have had no problems with it. I currently have almost 2000 songs on it and love the portability of taking my whole CD collection with me where ever I go! I invested in good noise cancelling headphones and can effectively block out the world be it in an airport or at the office and focus / concentrate without those annoying interuptions.

While the Apple ipod may have 80% of the marketshare I think you need to evaluate how you will use the MP3 player and find the one that fits that use the best. I use mine when I travel, and at the office, so battery life and easy to use display were the most important features for me. Dell offered a great deal when I was looking at my options and for $250 I got 30M of disk space, the noise cancelling headphones, and 12 hours of battery life. That was the best deal for me, and I haven't regretted it.

Mine is iRiver (an h10 20gb). I bought it because:

1. My boyfriend has had an iRiver for a couple years with not one single problem. Works great consistently and the battery is still fine.
2. People I know with ipods do have problems with theirs, having to send them in for repair and such, and declining battery life.
3. Sound is supposedly noticably better on the iRiver products. I have never compared side by side myself though.
4. For my own uses, I needed a voice recorder. With iRiver it was included. For iPod you had to buy extra accessories. I would've spent $100 more for an ipod of the same size to get the features I needed. Seemed to me you pay too much for the name brand label since it's most well known and most popular.
5. I dislike itunes.

My second choice was one of the Creative Zen products, but after handling them and using the touchpads, I found the iRiver easier to navigate. Ipod was my third choice.

So far I'm hearing kind of bad things about the nano. I'd probably hold off on that particular model 'til the bugs get worked out and go with some other kind of micro/mini flash player, or something with a little more storage on it which I think are still surprisingly small!

i have the iRiver as well, 5gig and that is plenty of space for cds. Unless you plan on going on African safaris for months at a time, im sure your daughter will be back on the PC before she listens to al lthe music.

I love the iRiver, The controls are intuitive and much cooler looking than the ipods. Plus you dont spend an extra 50$ for a little Apple Logo.

I have had an Ipod and an Iriver, My Iriver was awesome, but I wanted a change, so I followed the crowd, 4 days in to having the ipod photo, it broke, so I gave it a second chance got another, its kept going but have had software issues and the like. the only bonus to it is with the camera connector you can (slowly - and I mean slowly!) download your pics off your camera.

I would recommend the Iriver h340 or the h320 - great sound lots of funtionality, damned ugly looking, but good quality sturdy piece of equipment. I miss my h340.

If you didn't notice, it's a joke. Not real. Can't buy it.

My brother has an iAudio. It's very easy to use. If you spend a bit more ($30 or something), you can get one with 30 hour battery life - very useful, especially on trips. My other brother has an iRiver. They're both good players, but the iAudio seemed to have better sound, and the controls were a little better (physically easier to use). My sister has an iPod. I've played with them in the store and I wasn't impressed. If it were my choice, I would go with an iAudio.

I was recently seduced into getting a Nano; yes, there are probably slightly cheaper/higher capacity options out there but sometimes you just have to accept that not all choices are logical. The Nano is a thing of beauty, it's stupidly small, featherlight and does everything I wanted out of a player to replace the old (CF-based!) one I had.

I've not had any problems with it (although it is in a case because everyone told me it would scratch) and it's a joy to use. Yes, it would be nicer if it had 40G of storage rather than 4G, but then it would be the size of a regular iPod and I wouldn't want to carry it around. The Nano is so small that you don't even feel it in your pocket.

Simply put, there is no "best" player - and thinking back many many years, I think when I was 14 I'd rather have had the cool Nano that I wanted than something else because it was "better" to my parents eyes!

Thank you everyone for the advise and links (especially that one you sent drz01, that's very cool) they have all been helpful and informative. I think tonight I'm going to go to places like best buy and circuit city to see if I can actually touch and play with some of them.

I think the iPod is not going to happen and she really is ok with that, especially since the ones I like have more functions and can hold more songs. I think I will mainly be looking at the iRiver and iAudio but did like the Creative one too.

Thanks again all.

my opinion ... stick with the iPod

adults are practical (sometimes)

teenagers want what's popular

(although, i'd spend the extra 100 and get the iPod video ... it's very cool ... the wife and i each got one now :)

Go with the iPod. However, if you can afford it... go with the new iPod. The 30 gig iPod with video capabilities. At $299 it is only $50 cheaper than the 4gig Nano and is well worth it.

This is coming from someone who was very anti-Apple up until September when I decided to give the iPod a shot when I was in the market for a new mp3 player.

I'm already on my 2nd. My wife inherited my 20gig 4th gen iPod I bought in September, and I purchased the new 30gig 5th gen iPod video this month.

As much as I used to talk bad about Apple, and how the iPod was overrated... the truth is I have owned 3 different mp3 players prior to owning the iPod and the iPod is hands down the best one I have owned.
