Or at least mugged for my Camera.

St. Louis is the third most dangerous city in the country. And I got chased once by a guy when I went downtown to see a show. Maybe he just wanted to talk, but when somebody sprints at you, you book it. At least I do?

Anybody in Detroit or Camden, NJ care to sympathize with me?

I'm heading up to Baltimore tomorrow morning. I hope to get some great industrial shots up there. Should be interesting... ;-)

Yeah, there are some amazingly beautiful buildings along the Mississippi, but I'm going to have to get at least two or three people to go with me, otherwise I won't feel safe at all.

Particularly, there's an old factory being converted to lofts right along the waterfront, and I'm going to do my best to get some shots of it.

My back up plan is to go shoot some of the quarrys just across the river if I don't go downtown.

I think I am going to make my long overdue return for this challenge. Finally have some time to take some pictures this weekend and I am looking forward to having an update button again.

I'm really looking forward to this challenge.

I'm not looking forward to taking the shots, and meeting a big guy named 'Hank' who has suddenly taken a very keen interest in photography and my Canon.

I would suggest investing in a can of pepper spray. For only a $9.95 investment you will feel MUCH more comfortable carrying around a few thousand dollars worth of equipment. Never leave home without it.

Or, if you live in a "cool" state you can carry one of these suckas around with you:

Plus, stun guns also help to slow your subject down, ensuring that you get that quality shot! ;)

Geesh, that's encouraging. We're driving to NE next year and I really wanted to stop off in St. Louis to get a few shots. Now I'm having second thoughts (will have my wife and baby with me).

You will be fine - go at 4 or 5 am Sunday or Monday morning. All the bad people have passed out and the cops are off having donuts, so everything will be quiet and vacant, well, except for guard dogs.

Organize a group shoot or use the buddy system - have someone watch your back and surroundings while you are preoccupied.

I live just south of St. Louis and was in town yesterday for a field trip with my son and his school. I thought man this would be an awesome place to do some shots with an Industrial feel. Last night at rollover the challenge shows up. I thought had it only been a few days later I was there. However I am not sure in those places I would stop long enough to take pictures, my camera may not be a High dollar Canon, but I sure like it and my life! Good luck in the challenge, I may venture up this weekend and take my chances.

St. Louis isn't bad at all in the day, especially around Laclede's Landing which has some great restaurants and shops. Neither is the area around Busch Stadium and the Edward Jones Dome, all the buildings are law offices and such. It gets bad if you go across the river, or out of the strict downtown area, which is where all the industrial plants are, like the steel and coal stuff. Maybe I can snap some pictures of Busch, they're in the process of tearing it down and building the new ballpark,- it's quite a sight to see two halves of stadiums right next to each other.

Palmetto, I don't meant to discourage you from visiting, there's plenty to see in St. Louis especially the Zoo, which is the next only to the San Diego Zoo in terms of quality for free entrance, the science center, and if you come to St. Louis, you HAVE to visit the City Museum! Google it, and you'll see what I mean.

You also may want to stop in Clayton, it's a really pricey district of the city and there is a ton of condos and lofts being built there, starting at about $850 a month for a studio apartment.

Just don't go to the east side. Ever.

Unfortunately it'll be a quick trip passing through on the way to NE. I wanted to get at least one or two shots of the arch though. Suggestions on vantage points?

Well, last month while driving thru New Mexico I stopped and tok a picture of a oil refinery. Within a couple minutes I was surrounded by the local hick cop questioning why I was taking pics of a sensitive facility. I suggested that I was on public property, no signs in the area saying not to and nothing to make me believe that it was illegal or ill-advised. He stated it was the refineries policy. Well he was a nice enough cop, kinda laughed but took all my info and said he was required to give it to the refinery and to forward my info to Homeland Security for investigation. WOW, now I can spend three years in a jail without charges, can't wait.

i'd shoot it again with digital, but it's 250 km away.

Ahh... you're just paranoid. I live on the east side and I've never had a problem. I'd even ride my motorcycle right through downtown East Saint in the middle of the night when I was working on the landing. Quit being such a sissy and go take some pictures :)
