Nice! I got my "Americana" and "People" submissions already picked out! Now I just need to come up with some shots for the rest of them. :/

from their FAQ page
Can I enter a photo that I entered in another contest?
No, the photo is not eligible for submission.
I guess any dpc entries would not be eliligible??

I don't think DPC counts as there is no award for entering here.

I think it would be seeing that DPC has no prizes except a virtual ribbon.

It may be good advice to write to them and ask.

But generally speaking when a medium (print, T.V., radio, etc) states that no other contest entries or "writing/poems/photographs that have not been published elsewhere" they do mean that they only want submissions that have not been "published" ANYWHERE else including online. That has been my experience.

But again it never hurts to write to them for clarification - they may mean prior contest entries in their contest since the photo submitted must have been taken in the last three years.

Oh and a big thanks to Awpollard for giving everyone the heads up on this contest. I just might take up the challenge.

Thanks so much for the link. Does anyone know if you can enter more than one category?

you can enter one photo for each category, for a total of five submissions...

Darn, I already entered the nature pic I was going to enter into another contest! Ahhhh!!! I guess I better get busy stalking those Old Order Mennonites down in Dayton.

I have emailed them asking for verification. Usually my general rule fo thumb is "It is easier to ask forgiveness than permission" but some of ya'll have some really awesome shots and I would hate to think you lost a trip to the GC because you had entered it here as well.

I haven't heard back yet. I'll let ya know.

I still haven't heard anything.

I guess if you open the original, reprocess it, and change it just a bit, it would be a different shot. No?

I just received an email from them:

Hello,

Thanks for writing. We do not accept photos that have been entered in
previous contests, not necessarily because of prizes won, but that we want
to ensure that entrants have exclusive rights to their photograph.

Sincerely,

SMITHSONIAN

Now, obviously, dpc still enables us to have exclusive rights, but I think what they are trying to say, maybe, is that they don't want something "up" or published elsewhere, maybe?
11/30/2005 02:06:08 PM · #16
I would take that to mean that DPC is fine. They aren't going to know about it if a) you don't tell them or b) you win and the other "contest" doesn't raise a beef.

Since DPC isn't going to raise stink for an entry winning in another contest, it's going to be a moot point.

I always have a tough time deciphering what counts as "minor" and what doesn't for digital manipulation. Do you think these are stricter than basic editing or laxer? I emailed them and asked about conversion to B&W and sepia for digital images.

Come on folks, what part of "We do not accept photos that have been entered in previous contests..." don't you understand? They did not say we could bend the rules if we felt like it. What is happening to the world where we can not follow simple instructions?

Anyway, thanks Andy for directing us to the contest. We can imagine how tough the competition will be, but we're use to that on this site.

so does this mean we should be hiding our challenge results so we don't get ratted out??? What happens if I have 2 photos I took of the same thing but only edited one??? Does this mean I cannot use the other for this contest???

That's pretty harsh. I got a camera club with weekly competitions, I enter prints in these. Do you honestly think each of these images should be DQ'd from Smithsonian's competition? What Smithsonian is REALLY after, IMO, is not to have entries winning multiple PUBLICIZED contests. That would be bad.

If an image gets accepted you would have to DQ it here to keep it exclusive.

I really, really believe everyone's overanalyzing this. If all you've done is enter a DPChallenge, just go for it. If you had Kodak POTD or something, forget about it.

Has anyone bothered to check with the people running the Smithsonian contest to see if our challenge entries would be eligible for their contest?

Better to ask forgiveness than permission.
