Hello everyone. I'm writing to inform those of you who have downloaded the Webshots desktop manager that you may have unwittingly made your computer vulnerable to spyware and/or adware. To find out, go to //www.cexx.org/adware.htm and scroll down to "Gator GAIN (GMT.exe, CMESys.exe, GAIN_TRICKLER_*.EXE)". You can read about the programs that may have been installed, and there is a link to a page that will detect them--as well as show you how to remove them. If you're getting lots of annoying pop-ups, chances are you'll find the source. Feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

I tend to run spybot S&D and/or ad-aware after installing any "free" software be careful though if you need a particular application and you discover it uses ad banners in it.

I concur...adaware is awesome. It's worth its weight in gold. Get it and run it every few days. Your pooter will like you for it.

Yea, see I always thought V Shield was good enough. Little did I know you could pick up these kinds of things from apparently legitimate sources. Sneaking programs in like that should be illegal. And, I'm sure it probably will be [someday].

I feel violated. ;)

I use Norton Firewall. While occasionally GAIN, Savenow, etc programs will get ON to my computer (like Kazaa, for example cannot be installed without it), Norton won't allow them to access my computer, thus they lie dormant until I quarantine them. Some 'free' programs won't function if you delete these things, so sometimes that's your only option if you want to continue to use them.

I also run Spybot and Ad-Aware. These programs are free and seem to work well. Both are highly recommended in most PC magazines.

Exercise 1: Take a blank CD-R, and measure its weight with an ultra-precise weight. Then, write Adaware to the CD, and measure it again. You will notice that there is a minute difference in the weight of the CD - it has become slightly lighter. This is because some of the covering material (only VERY LITTLE, but enough to measure, if you have an adequately accurate weight) turns to vapour.

Excercise 2: Take your computer and weigh it on an ultra-precise weight. Then, download and install Ad-aware, and measure it again. You will notice there is no difference in weight.

So when you say it is worth its weight in gold, it either has negative value, or is worthless.

I would argue it is worth significantly more than its weight in gold.

Thank you for your attention. This has been a public service broadcast by SharQ anal-retentiveness incorporated.

I ran Adaware. It took out Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm. Both don't load properly anymore.

My Friend ran it on his GF computer. It no longer booted. He had to reinstall WindowsXP from the CDROM boot.

I run Adaware with XP, Norton and Zone Alarm and have never had any problems.

I downloaded Adaware, and it wanted to quarantine Norton, but you can choose which files it actually affects. You just have to go though the files in the log one by one. Someone had already mentioned that you needed to watch out for that. Gain was my problem...and even after I had uninstalled it [via the manufacturer's instructions], the program still found hidden files. With that in mind, I think it worked quite well in my case. =)

spyware = evilllllll

They do everything they can, to stay hidden but there's plenty of free programmes to find them

By the way, if you use Kazaa, there is a way to avoid all the nasty bits they throw in, go here: www.k-lite.tk and download "Kazaa Lite", its basically Kazaa but with no ads, no spyware, no popups and its much more effective.
