Last Night I was asked to take shots for our women's B-Ball team. The lighting was terrible. I tried adjusting the white balance, but I don't really know how to fine tune it, which just made things worse. I decided to put the white balance back onto auto. I ended up shooting on shutter-priority at 1/250 to stop the motion. I was already wide open and the pics were still too dark. So long story short, I ended up having to bump the ISO up to 1600 which gave me some pretty grainy shots. What can I do so that this doesn't happen again?

Make them put more lighting in the gym.

Use flash.

Get a faster aperture lens.

yeah.. get a fast lens.

I was trying to shoot at 5.6, and had setting of 1/90 and 3200 iso... not a good combination anywhere..... i ended up renting a 2.8 lens, which made it possible to shoot around 125 - 1/180 800 ISO and 2.8

and yes, the color balance will be tough, i recommend shooting a gray card before you start and use a custom white balance. If you don't know how to do that your instruction manuel should give a fairly good description.
