It doesn't seem that voters really voted differently when there aren't as many entries... |
For almost the entire life of DPChallenge, from January 2002 up until about 2 months ago, we had only one Open challenge per week.
As the site grew, we eventually reached the point where we saw over 400 entries per Open challenge in a typical week. At this size, many people found it difficult to vote and comment on the open challenges.
By running two Exclusive Open challenges per week (where you can only enter one), we are able to bring each challenge down to a manageable size, where more people voting on the challenge now have the time to vote and comment thoughtfully. It also means more ribbons per week in Open challenges (6 instead of 3).
As far as members being able to enter Member challenges, that is one of the perks we offer in exchange for the membership fee. As I'm sure you know, the hardware and bandwidth costs for a site like this are substantial. If non-members could do everything members could do, what would be the incentive to pay the $25?
We do offer quite a lot to all Registered users on DPChallenge, even if you choose not to pay the membership fee. We don't time-limit our trial period like other sites, so you can keep entering an Open challenge every week for as long as you like, and never pay for membership, if that's your choice. Of course, Drew and Langdon hope you'll like the member features enough to purchase a membership, but even if you don't, you're more than welcome to stay enjoy the free forums, tutorials, weekly open challenge and other features for as long as you like.
