I originally liked the Bellagio Fountains the best, but there's just something I don't like about the lighting on the people. I don't know what you can do for editing though so I'll include it in my vote anyway. It's still a wonderful shot. Actually, they're all wonderful... :)

1. Playa del Carmen Beach
2. Yarra River
3. Banff Canada (This one is different and interesting)
4. Bellagio Fountains

Yarra River, Playa Del Carmen Beach, Hotel Entrance and if pushed for a 4th from this group, Drake Bridge.

Nope, I absolutely disagree.

I'm talking about the quality in the '100 best photographs' book they publish. Many are grainy, or blurry but show exceptional subjects. They care about the subject much more than the technical side of things - which is exactly how it should be.

Yes, you should be able to get the best image possible - and their photographers do - but that seldom means technically perfect in zone system boring but perfect sense of the word that some people fall into.

I already told you in chat, but if you forgot:

Drake Bridge, Yarra River, Playa del Carmen, Hotel Entrance.

All great shots though. You must be going crazy trying to decide. Sorry to remind you :)

My choices would be the Yarra River, Drake Bridge and Playa del Carmen.

I'd go with Banff, San Diego, Melbourne, and Texas, personally. In no particular order.

woahh. yeah, really nice. can't believe that got a 5. Pure crazyness. I think you're right on track picking your four though. Any conclusion yet?

Gordon, they are all nice images. According to the rules and desired qualifications, some work better than others: "intriguing, personal, culturally revealing, inspiring, or just plain striking. In all cases, we look for pictures that transcend simple travel snapshots. Now we're challenging you to send us shots that evoke the spirit of a place—its people, its character, its events, its soul."

3. I feel that the Yarra River photo does evoke the spirit of the place very well, so that would be my third choice. Plus, it's very striking! However, I'm nervous that you used a star filter for it--this is National Geographic, after all, the ultimate magazine of reality.

2. The second would have to be the Banff Canada shot, with the old fashioned petrol pump and the striking mountains in the background--it really gets to the heart of its personality, and to some of the dialogue that is going on there.

1. First, I would go for the Bellagio fountains--it was a stroke of genius to include the crowd--it shows Vegas to be a gawkers paradise! In other words, it is more about Las Vegas than the fountains themselves.

I love the other photos as photos, but I don't feel that any of the others would be competitive relative to the context criteria.

Super work!

Well, then i think you should still submit photographs that are clear, than the ones that are slightly blurry as your subject matter really doesn't do anything for me :) I'd submit the Australian photo first, then the bridge in Austin.

BTW, though some of their shots may be blurry, most of their shots are perfect, especially landscape shots. I haven't seen any landscape shots the NG photographers have done that are blurry, ANY. (Take Galen Rowell's photos for example that he published. NONE of them had blurry issues)

No star filter, that's just what happens with a small aperture and a long exposure.

Ultimate magazine of reality huh? LOL... a big controversial issue in Photojournalism is one of the big covers that NG used... they totally switched around the pyramids and a lot of other stuff, with pyramids and the camel riding past, it's been a huge issue for years. Not so reality oriented all the time ;-)

Good choices, I'm sure it was a tough decision. Good luck!
