Yester day i went to the canon service center to get my camera cleaned, I walked in and they were really nice, told her i wanted my camera cleaned, she noticed that i had a battery grip and asked me would you like us to modify that grip, i never heard there was a modifaction, how much i asked her, FREE, well yes you can modify my grip, the modifaction does something to the grip so when your holding your camera vertical it wont flex and causea short in the camera ( which i have experienced before the camera gives you an error message because the lens weight is to much) so i left my camera there to get cleaned and the modifaction for FREE and i can pick it up by WED next week,
so im happy with canon.

Considering there was a general recall on early models of the battery grip for 20D. I don't see this as anything special in service. In fact, I believe by law you are supposed to be notified when you bring a car into a dealership that there was a general recall. So I figure it's very similar.

What error message do you get on your canon when the lens is too heavy? I have the canon 75-300mm is lens and keep getting err99 on my camera ..it is making me crazy. I only get this error when using this lens, all other lenses work fine.

Help? Clues?

Troy was talking about using the 20D's battery grip with a heavy lens. That grip has been the subject of a recall, so I doubt you have the same problem with your 300D.

As a first step I'd do a visual inspection, and then a good cleaning of the contacts on both the lens and the mount. Cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol is what I use. Also, when the lens is mounted, is it at all loose? It should be snug with no discernable movement.

I have cleaned the contacts, they are bright and shiney on the camera and on the lens. The lens is only 5 or 6 months old. There is just a slight wiggle, but nothing major. I guess I have to resign myself to sending it to a Canon repair center since they've informed me they will only repair it. After this experience I doubt I will buy another canon lens, I will get a different brand. Thank you for trying to help :)

Is the lense IS ???

If so, it likely needs to be sent to Canon. Do it while it's still under warranty. My $1700+ 70-200mm IS had problems. THey had to replace the unit. Still not thrilled. What happens if it has another failure....

Yes it is an IS lens. I'm not thrilled with the fact it has broken this early in the game and it was a $500 lens. Like you .. when will the next failure be ... probably after the warranty is expired!

I have the Canon 75-300 IS lens. After a little over a year of usage, it suddenly developed a problem with the IS.

If I had IS turned on, and I shot several pictures in a row, I would get an ERR 99. The only solution was to take the lens off and put it back on. This happened whether shooting with my 20D or my Rebel. Both camera bodies experienced the same thing. (except the Rebel didn't show the error, it just locked up and wouldn't take pictures until I removed the lens and replaced it)

An additional symptom of the problem was that if I left IS turned off, I could shoot forever without an error. So the error _only_ occured if IS was turned on.

I sent the lens in for repair. It came back once ... unchanged. Sent it back again and this time they fixed it. Unfortunately, being outside of the warantee, I think I paid $150 for the repair.

NOTE!!!

If any user has the IS problem and you are out of warranty...FIGHT THEM on it!

The number of cases that I have heard with this problem are excessively high. (Though, probably not high enough to warrant a general recall.) There is clearly an issue with Canon's IS manufacturing that has plagued a large number of lenses (I believe all made within a certain year or so.) Way too many to be the simple normal "out of spec". I think Canon knows there is a quality issue. So if you're but just past your warranty I would push Canon a bit on the matter and I bet you they'll likely waive it.

I honestly believe there is almost enough grounds for a class action lawsuit. I've gone to numerous forums and found an extremely large number of people with the exact same problem I had. Most were 70-200mm IS, and a few other IS lenses.

Also, DWerry...how long afterwards did you send it in the second time? It may have been covered under warranty. As when I got my lens back I receive a sheet stating warranty repairs were covered for 6 months.

It seems like Err 99 is a catchall for many Canon issues. Check out this site for LOTS of info.

I just sent my 10D into Canon for this same problem. I know it wasn't a lens problem because I still get Err 99 without the lens on the camera.

Wow! You guys have been a great help, I am so glad I decided to ask about my lens problems!!

After reading what theSaj said I may just fight to get my money back, a full refund!!! I don't want a repaired lens that will break again! I'm still well within my warranty range so have plenty of time to fight them.

dwterry .. I get the err99 almost every time, taking it off and putting it on doesn't help anymore. If I do get it working, when I look through the viewfinder I see a gray haze and it also comes through on my images making them darker than normal. Once in awhile it lets me take a few shots without problems. I will get the lens out tonight and shut IS off and see if I can shoot. It's gotten to the point that I can't shoot at all in Manual mode with that lens. It was my favorite lens and I miss using it!
