Seriously, can we have a forum for discussing the photos post challenge - all the photos, winners, ones we felt should have done better, our own, the brown etc - for thier photographic merits and downfalls and relevents to the challenge that disallows for people to to use phrases like "quit whining" "your photo did better than mine, so don't complain" "you should just be happy with your top blah find" or "how dare you question the perfection of the blue ribbon".

This is an educational photography forum. People learn though thier mistakes. So often we are yelled down when trying to discuss (or realise) them throught imput via the forums, because others deem it as whining. 99% of the time it is not, people are just curious about what they could have done better, or want to share thier opinions on an image.

That said, would others be interested in a post-challenge discussion forum, OR if thats not possible, if a thread was made post challenge for the discussion of images would you be interested in it for discussig the challenge as a whole with referances to individual images (as opposed to just a bunch of people saying they were scored unfairly)???

The Challenge Results forum is a "post-challenge discussion forum."

I am moving this thread there as it's not really a suggestion for a challenge, which is what the Challenge Suggestion forum is for.

but do you see what i am saying mk?

look at rikkis thread, it didnt take long for the whiner and complianer naysays to come out. This happens every time.

What I'd love to see is a check list in our preferences where we can choose which forums to hide individually, as with Rants.

Why not hide all of the forums?

I see at least two threads on the main page right now discussing aspects of challenge results, including the nearly-ubiquitous "Under-rated" thread.

I agree that it might be easier if there was a single, automatically-generated thread instead of the ad hoc approach we have now.

Incidentally, you could always start that thread ... just go to the "Challenge Results" section of the forums.

Have photo ribbon winners ever been seriously discussed on this site?

Why don't you click on one and see if there's a "discussion" in the "discussion thread" which accompanies it?

You mean the comments section? - I find people generally don't enter into discussion on a ribbon winner in the comments section.

The post-challenge comments generally consist of 'well done', 'congrats on your ribbon' etc.

Should the winners be discussed on the individual images comments, or all together in a thread in 'Challenge Results'?

Besides, who's brave enough to critique the epitome of perfection?

:-p

unfortunately it happens. my thread was meant as a "second look" for the ones who were good but didn't really make it higher.

You have a photo you want me to comment on?

I agree, people don't "discuss" enough in those threads, but it's the logical place to put any discussion of that photo. If you wanted to, say, compare the blue ribbon-winner with a conceptually similar but much lower-scoring photo, that might be better in a thread discussing the whole challenge.

Although, I sometimes insert links to other photos in a photo's discussion thread; if it's mine, I'll sometimes put a link to the "original" for comparison.

You would know better than I. I would make an educated guess and say no...

It's been my observation that any time someone has the temerity to discuss any perceived "flaws" in a ribbon-winning image in these forums, s/he gets shouted down as a purveyor of sour grapes. The consensus ethos in DPC seems to be "let the winners enjoy their moment in the sun, they earned it". It seems to be especially bad form to reference, say, the 8th-place shot and compare it to, say, the 2nd place shot and "explain" why the former "should have had" the ribbon :-)

Thats what i was trying to say (thanks General E!), yes, while technically the forum is there, it is not really being used for the dicussion of the photos in an educational manner, like the example you gave of comparing concepts.

So i am curious if it is something just i would like to see or would starting such a thread be an instant flop.

The ribbon winners are selected by popular vote. Sometimes they will have photographic merit. Rarely, will there be a discussion on the 'why' or even the 'how'...

Yesterday I wrote up a critique of the three winners in 'grain' - I was about to post it in 'Challenge Results' but had second thoughts. Mainly for the reasons given by Robert.

Yea, I know, I've got no guts.

One way to find out...start one. ;^) What's the worst that can happen? So it flops - you tried... besides, maybe it won't.

Well let's change that -- for starters by making it clear that comparing the photos, and perhaps noting strong points in the lower photos or flaws in the higher-finishing photo does not mean that they "should" have finished in any other order.

I think our system achieves a consistent result. However, it is statistically improbably that there are very many voters who ranked every photo in the exact order that the site average determined. I see nothing wrong with discussing several of the variations of opinion which average out to the final result.

They're not discussing the winners.

'Challenge Results' is full of 'underrated' and 'why didn't I score higher' threads.

It's all in how a critique is presented. Same as leaving comments on portfolio or challenge entry images. Use a little tact. State verified reasons for/against...don't just say "it sucks" or something similar...

Think about how you would feel if someone left what you are about to say on one of your images. You know, the old "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" (excuse me if I misphrased that).
