I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to wich camera is better. the nikon coolpix 5700 or the olympus e-20. I want crisp clear well focused pictures. i like to do alot of potraits as well as scenery shots. I've read alot of reviews and i am leaning towards the nikon.

Thanks Kevin

I don't know much about the Nikon, but I do have an e20. I think an e20 would do well for portraits...so long as you have a really good lighting setup for shooting indoors. Low light autofocus is quite lacking. The camera performs very poorly in normal indoor lighting, even when it does manage to focus. The on-board flash doesn't help at all (don't really know why they put it on the cam..except for an occasionally fill flash :P). Another word of warning, the lcd will show your image in perfect focus when it isn't at times...I've found I have to zoom in on a pic in the lcd quite a bit to find if the photo is really in focus or not. Oh, I have found the cam doesn't deal well with blue skies for some reason...produces grain. It also seems to get a little wacky with some intense fuschia/reds.

On the bright side, the camera is ergonomically great. The controls are handy and easily adjusted. And given adequate lighting and a competent photographer, it does produce a quality image. I love that the manual focus and zoom controls are on the lens like a 'real' camera. It just feels more natural to shoot that way.

To be honest, had I to do it over again...I probably wouldn't bother with an e20...I'd go straight to a professional level interchangeable dslr.

Good luck with your purchase :)

Joshua,

I just purchased the E20 and yes, in my list was also de nikon. I guess the choice IMO depends very much on the kind of expirirnce your looking for. the quality is almost the same, I dought anyone can tell wich photos are from wich in a comparison.

The main difference is that with the E-20 you're getting a SLR camera. what you see thru the view finder is exactly what your photographing. everything else feels and works exactly like a SLR and (if that's what you want) it is great. the lens go to 2.0 so it's great for potraits; the colors are very natural and more neutral than the other cameras.

I disagree with froober, I haven't had ANY problems with the focus and the fill in flash is IMO way better than anything I tried before (very smooth) and it doesn't burn faces like other cameras even if you're close to your subject.

my only complaints:

-there are artifacts in long expouse shots.
-it only goes up to 640
-after 4th shot you have to wait fot it to write the prior shots to the CF

I like the design of the the nikon and it's general quality. to me the difference was getting a SLR and seeing thru a "real" viewfinder vs an electronic one (like the nikon's).

hope this helps,

LM

Hi, I got the Nikon Coolpix a few months ago.I love it and find the zoom capability very good. It feels tough and it has good functions. I have found a few problems with it though, low light focusing is pretty hard although you can use the in-built flash, this is too bright though, but it can be bracketed to soften the effects. It also states that macro capability is as close as 3cm, but I had a few problems getting this close to subjects, found it hard to focus. I think that I am doing something wrong here! I recently bought a copy of the "Short Courses" guide for the Nikon Coolpix 5700 to try and help clear up these problems. It explains the cameras functions in more detail than the manual and I think its worth getting. Overall, I am happy with the Coolpix, the amount of functions and the lens are of good quality and the compactness, compared to a DSLR, enable you to carry it around with you. Hope you are happy with whatever you get!

I've been very happy with the E-20.

I also don't have the trouble that Froober suggested.
I've had mine since February and have shot 5000+ photos.

Of course I don't have any ribbons on my profile page...???
YET
Best of luck. So exciting getting a new camera.

dpr thread on autofocus issues

I'm not gonna search more..but if you study the dpreview forums on e20's you will find that the camera does have it's issues.

Okay Froober your not nuts...
Your correct there are issues. I read dpreview and was active in the SLR Olympus group at one time. I should of said ...."I don't have any E-20 issues" but some folks do.
Now didn't I see the guys with white coats heading your way?
