I know I'm nowhere near the first person to write about a dropping score, but here's the situation on my current entry:

After the first couple of voting days, the score stabilized as it usually does.. although sometimes it was higher, sometimes it was lower, it never wavered too far from an "average" score.

How come one day before the voting ends, my score takes a drastic nosedive with just 10 additional votes? I calculated that 10 people would have to have scored a '3' on my image. I find the chances of that happening very unusual, especially now... has anyone seen this?

My entry is admittably doing very well, even thought it had the chance for a ribbon until now... any other ribbon contenders out there that saw this happening? Is it possibly people try to vote down good entries before closing so that their pictures do better?

Or do all the harsh voters leave voting until the end? I'm completely baffled...

That is unusual. My normal trend is Monday, start out pretty well. halfway thru monday til Saturday, drop, steadily. Make a little comeback saturday and sunday. your trend is most unusual.

I've got some similar thoughts.

Maybe it would be better if one wouldn't see the scores until voting is over??

People perhaps realized that a lot of people gave generally low scores so they went back and adjusted their own voting down etc ... the start of a down-ward spiral.

But perhaps it's just because of the theme of the current challenge that the voting patterns seems so "weird" ...

If you're thinking its the low-key challenge, its not... Perhaps if it was, I wouldn't have questioned it - it seems to be one of the most differently interpretive challenges we had :)

I was referring to the self-portrait contest.

Ahh.. not that one either :) Which leaves the off-center contest..

No egos to bruise in this contest, and no wildly interpretive definition of the contest theme, which is why it seemed odd...

should have mentioned which contest :)

those 10 people did not have to give you 3's. Those 10 people could have given you anything from a 1-10. Other people could have gone back and lowered their score that had previously given you. Say someone gave you a 10, then went back through voting, and revised it to a 7. Still a respectable score, however it would have dropped your points a bit. This week, I had just the opposite happen in SP challenge. I had dropped to a 5.4 and then overnight zoomed up to 5.8. I found this to be most unusual for me.
I don't think it's people voting down other shots to make their scores better. Like 30 people would have to do that to make a difference in your score.

My off-centre has dropped from 6.4 to 6.05 in the last day as well. And the comments I've gotten in the mean time all indicated they gave it between 8 and 10. The site would get about 1/10 of the hits if it weren't for the scoring updates, so I doubt that'll happen.
It seems most of you are freaks like me...checking in several times per day.

Per DAY?

Look at community/who's online.

Some people check several times per 5 minutes.

Yea, I do get obsessed with watching my score, though sadly I'm usually watching my score go down. For the self portrait challenge, I've seen my scores go from a near 5.5 down to 5.1 and back up to around 5.25.

To get back to the original question, I myself tend to go back and look at all the scores I gave right before the challenge finishes, and I end up boosting a few people with 6s or 7s up to 8s or 9s, and a few people with higher scores down. I guess if other people do that too, that could account for last minute plunges or boosts in scores.

David,

A couple of challenges ago I noticed something odd myself. Early on in the voting (30+ votes) I was around 6, within an hour or so (10+ more votes or so) it dropped off more than half a point. During the week it crept back up .25 or so. Almost all of the 15 or so comments were positive and some said they gave 8's and 9's.

I am sure someone is going to complain that I did this, but I am doing it anyhow as of 11:32pm I had a 5.3879 on my off centered challenge with 116 votes and 2 comments. My score did drop some today but not a lot. It has bounced all over the place this week, a lot more than normal thats for sure.
