Has anyone bought or been using the external drive storage devices that run through firewire or your USB 2.0 port on a PC? I really need to get something for backing up the originals of all my photographs but dont want to spend $500 but think anything under $100 might be too cheap.

Any recommendations on hardware storage from $100-300 would be greatly appreciated. I am not a pro or even an advanced amateur so my hobby earns me no income to say it is worth it other than in security and time spent taking photographs.

Thanks for any help.

Do you have a firewire or USB 2 port on your computer? Firewire and USB 2 are comparable in speed, USB 1.0 would be too slow. Get a bare case and plunk in a drive of your choice....

LaCie D2 drives are the best external drives you can get, they have USB2, FW400 and FW800.

here is a 250GB disk for only $219

I have one 200GB, one 400GB, one 500GB and one LaCie mini 250GB, I've tried other brands but nothing comes even close to the LaCie :)

I have an external 300G drive and use FireWire to back everything up. It is amazingly quick! Far better than backing up to CD or DVD and I just keep my external drive turned off (unplugged) when not backing up to avoid any mishaps.

yes i have usb and firewire both....what i like about some is ability to set directories it will mirror/ghost and then push a button and it does an automatic backup. then i can disconnect and put on shelf or in drawer without worrying about power spikes or other mishaps corrupting the drive and damaging my archived original raw photos.

We've been using these at work for a while. Not only flexibility in connections, their disk software has been good for a long time. They've also had a 1TB drive available for $999 for a few months.

What I really want, is a system that offers RAID 5 striping and about 1TB. Cause, 1TB is nice...but man...if it dies ALL IS LOST. *lol*

Actually what I want is TD-ROMs (Terabyte Discs). That way I can burn two copies.

I'm paranoid....

While we're on the subject (or back on the subject as the case may be)... I was wondering if anyone had advice about whether to leave an external drive on all the time, or if it's better to leave it off unless it's being used...?

I bought a 250GB external drive ($219) earlier this month, and I'm loving the storage space! I'm just wondering if I should leave it on or turn it off...

USB 2.0 has a high speed version and a regular speed version correct? Does the wire that connects to the port makes a difference?

Use firewire. It's 100% better than everything else. It's fast and stable. USB 2.0 has good speed but is very unstable and you may have issues connecting.

I you are turning it on and off every day I'd leave it on, if you only fire it up once or twice/week then I'd shut it off in between. Many modern drives have a "sleep" mode to spin the disk down when idle for long periods.

USB 1.0 is the low-speed version, 2.0 is the high speed. Although the speeds sfor USB 2.0 and Firewire seem similar, Firewire outruns USB 2.0 without trying hard, and does not require nearly as much CPU overhead. Go Firewire, and don't look back.

Echo that. I have the 230G an attach via Firewire to my Mac and it works without issue.

I choose dual whenever possible. I do not trust Lacie, especially the bigger drives, which have dual drives inside. I use a Seagate 400GB external firewire and USB drive. This allows me compatibility with nearly any computer, at the very least at the base USB 1 level, which is fast enough to transfer a few files around.
