Olympus just recently came out with the 7.1 MP SP-310, 8.0 MP SP-350 and the 6.0 MP 10x Zoom SP-500 UZ, each for under $400.

Sony DSC W or V range. Where P&S is concerned they pack everything in a pretty good size. The nice thing is you can use normal batteries if you don't want to lug around the battery charger or if you run out altho' the NiMH batteries last a good while.

Another camera suggestion is the Canon Digital Rebel (300d). (not the Rebel XT) Prices have dropped quite a bit on them since the XT came out.

Boy do I have a deal for you. I have moved to a new camera and would love to find my previous camera a great home:

Konica-Minolta DiMAGE A1 (only 5MB however)
Program Maxxum 3600 HS (TTL) flash (awesome in off-camera wireless)
Minolta ACT-100 Telephoto Lens
RC-1000L remote cable
Filter pack - UV, ND, gradient, star, diffusion, polarizer

Everything is in super shape and has original boxes and manuals - yes I am annul. Yes it is a fixed lens, but then no worries about sensor cleaning. The anti-shake and flash systems that Moniolta employ are super.

I have poked around to find current and available prices and believe $650 for the whole shoot'n match is a fair price.

What do ya think? Is this the deal for you or what?

how do you focus with point and shoot cameras typically? is there a little ring around the lense that you can turn? if do you gotta turn a little annoying wheel and go through menus?

Typically, manual focus sucks on P & S cameras though there are a couple that have the manual focus on the lens rather than a slider on the LCD. I believe the Panasonic FZ30 is one.

The fuji 7000 is auto focus, and for manual has a ring around the lens like a dSLR, but it is electronic (you move ht ering, the ring moves the motor that moves the lens for focus). Works pretty well. The viewfinder for your eye is an EVF (electronic). A tinly LCD screen in there lets you see waht the lens sees, just like a dSLR. you also have the big LCD screen. It can also take 640x480 video at 30 frames a second with sound, just like a video camera, and you can annotate pics with voice recordings.

OMG I love this one and the price is AWESOME! Anyone have any objections before I whip out my wallet?

I have the FZ20. It's only shortcoming is that your images become too noisy at ISO settings above 200. I think this carries over to the FZ30 but noise reduction software is a reasonable solution. It's a flaw I can live with since everything else about the camera is pretty darn good and the price seems like a bargain considering the wealth of features.

When you press the shutter button, does the picture take instantly, or is there a delay? Because that would just piss me off..

There is more delay than you get in the D70, but not really bad. The dpreview.com review of FZ30 has many tests results regarding timing.

I'll have to chime in and support the Panasonic FZ30. I have the FZ5 - wanted something simple and I love it. The picture quality I'm getting is IMO outstanding. I'm thinking of going with the FZ30 in addition for times when I want a little more control and features - the FZ5 is pretty basic. Let us know what you decide

I have loved both my Olympus cameras cause they feel good in the hand, aren't too small to lose and are FULL of options. My 5050 is now discontinued from Olympus but the 7070 is and it looks great. (p.s. don't take the images in my challenges as an example of the olympus standard, I'm still learning and I do have some better stuff on my website)
Olympus C-7070 wide zoom $449.99 May I also point out the newly designed swivel lcd screen and that it takes two cards at once compact flash and XD. The custom modes is what really sold me on mine.

Editing to show this one I just found and would love to purchase, even better in some aspect than the 7070: Olympus

I agree to also check out dpreview and find a shop that has stuff you can play with. This helped me and a friend of mine both pick a different camera than what we originally wanted.

Good luck

I love my G6. The picture quality to me is amazing for a "p&s" camera. What you should do is actually go and hold and touch all these cameras you're thinking about buying. I was just going to get a Canon A95 p&s until I held the G6. The grip feels so good and dammit I just love the camera. :) Here's a recent shot I've taken with it of the little boy my wife nannies for.
