I took a bunch of technically insufficent, over exposed, under exposed, too far away, bad composition down right horrible and unedited pics of nola today. If anyone cares to see what it all looks like down this way...

so sad....

Woah :(

I disagree with the technically insufficient yadda yadda, these photos tell a striking story, and they tell it quite well.

OMG, that is unreal. 8 weeks later and it still looks like that? Can you tell us what the general state of mind is down there? I know what mine would be if my home still looked like that 8 weeks after the fact.

And welcome back, glad to see you around.

(drive by shooting) - what more can we ask? Been waiting for this. Thanks Julia.

Interesting choice shooting it mostly with the fish. By accident or design, it tells a very compelling story and still reflects your unique vision.

As always, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.

Thank you for keeping the reality of what's going on there fresh in our minds. I was amazed to see that there is still so much carnage there. Thank you for sharing these images Julia.

since returning home to Nola, ive been feeling like my neighborhood was a war zone. How could people say algiers was unscathed? Now I understand. I came home from my photo drive feeling like a big whiney baby! ;) If I ever complain about the condition of my immediate neighborhood again..just slap me. How can you clean up that much mess in 8 weeks? Its gonna take years. The piers by the lake were once the foundation for a Brennans restuarant and Jagers...and a few other little bars perched on the water. I saw a kitchenaid mixer, a couple of toilets..and some silverware...but no sign of those buildings. The homes I drove by today were all under water after the levees broke. How can you fix that? I held my nose when taking pics of that girls apartment. When I came out, I could taste the moldy smell in my mouth for 10 minutes. The stench of the garbage piles nearly made me puke....luckily I hadnt eaten yet this day. I came home and scrubbed my body several times over. I havent had a tetanus shot yet...better get one! There arent enough hospitals here for the people to come back. There isnt enough livable housing. But there were butterflies amid the carnage...and i figured that was hope enough. (though im not any good at shooting butterflies). Today was emotionally exhausting. What I saw today was not the worst of it. I wish i could get peoples faces...but it feels too invasive right now. How are people handling it? We are all pretty much wonky at this point. Short term memory loss. Cant sleep well. Stress. Depression. Hope. Anger. Uncertainty. And as New Orleans always seemed like a 3rd world country ...now it looks like one. Katrina means cleansing? We'll see.

KenSkid is from and is in New Orleans...The outlying areas to the west are doing ok...just lots and lots of "drywall" and funiture out on the street waiting for pickup....

...also...many stores have limited hours b/c of no workers!...No malls, movies...etc etc...

...but we're doing alright!

ERROR: grigrigirl is already in your favorites list.

Julia,

Thanks for sharing these. Sadly the rebuilding is going to take much longer than the short attention spans of the news media.

You remain in my thoughts and prayers. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I had missed this earlier. Such devastation and so much hurt on the neediest of people. Although the news no longer covers it I believe the gulf coast it is still in the mind of many of us. Hope the depression and anger is lessening and the hope and sleep are improving. Good luck with your future.

Hey grigrigirl,

I see from your profile you live in New Orleans. I'm in Slidell. Yeah, still looks BAD here too. I know a few other photogs here (2 who are also members of DPC, and 1 who I'm going to introduce to it soon). We get together every so often to go shooting. So if you are ever coming to the northshore, give me a holler.

I've taken a bunch of Slidell, Lakeview, 9th ward, Hwy 90, Michoud, 17th street canal area, etc. I'm going to try and go down to more of Hwy 90 tomorrow, Nov. 12. I want to get some of the MOUNTAINS of trash being collected at the temporary landfills too. Amazing.

It is interesting how people are starting to think everything is "fixed", when we still have large areas without electicity or water yet, not to mention being cleaned up!

How did your home fare? I was very blessed, with only minor wind damage. I hope you did well also.

Take care! We'll all get thru this!

Doug

Julia. Hope everything is still well with you. I could smell the mold in that one apartment way up here in my home. Are you living in New Orleans now? Do you have any updates? I've been keeping you in my prayers.

Julia, I used to live in Metairie and worked between Lakeside and Oakwood Malls. I heard Oakwood is going to have to be rebuilt from the fire. I've been following a lot of it from NOLA.com and I still want to cry everytime I see photos of the Lakeshore area. I didn't look though all the photos yet...but I am wondering if you got anything around City Park.
