maybe the wording of the challenges should be thought out a little better: "black on black" is a little difficult to compute and seems to be the biggest question here. if it's clear what the challenge is then we can all concentrate on doing the photography rather than trying to figure out "what" we are supposed to do.

I agree with goodtempo, a better desciption of what was required whould have solved a lot of the problems here!!

Not being a profession photographer and not have taking any classes in photography, I had no idea what low key was, I guess I should had look it up. The challenge said black on black, so I thought it was a black subject on a black background with enough light so the subject don't blend in with the background. I feel the challenge should have been clearer.

I think it's hillarious that for a challenge titled Black on Black, people would take offense at someone voting a picture with a colorfull subject lower. If you want your photo to be judged solely on it's quality, without the constraints of the challenges, go post on PhotoSIG. There are no constraints there.

That said, this was probably one of the worst conflicts between the challenge title and description I've seen in the few months I've been here. At least like goodtempo pointed out, the next couple are pretty open and unambiguous. I think.... (How many beautiful cityscapes will we get for country life...)

This is one week I'm just glad I'm not a member, so I don't get to vote...

I'm not sure I will vote, although I did submit a photo, and am recieving my first sub 5.0 score (4.7). I think I must not understand the challenge too well, so I don't feel qualified to vote this time.

As usual, I just interpreted the challenge pretty liberally, and gave everyone pretty good scores! Besides, I think this has turned out some very fine photography--and at a level that has been much higher, I feel, than many challenges in the past. There are some really great photos in this challenge!

I took a photo of a black subject on a black background that, by the way it's lit, has color in it. How do you vote that?

Marianne,

Personally, I believe you are as qualified as anyone to vote, probably more than most. I did my shot based on the Black on Black interpretation at the top of the thread, pretty well to the letter, except maybe for the 18% gray part and I'm lower than 4.7. So how uninteresting was my subject matter and composition? I didn't even get any comments. Please vote. And if I'm one of the trolls that put you below 5, I'm truly sorry. Hopefully in the future we can get these interpretation things ironed out before the challenges begin. Take Care.

You know, if your opinion on how you voted has changed, you can go back and change your votes. Just a thought.

YOu have such a low score probable because you took the challenge to literally. Really! It didnt say to have 18% light and everything else black. Next time just go with the flow. Relax and have a good time with it. Good luck!

My low score is caused by my boring subject, so says mci AND sonifo. lol

Awww. That makes it all better (plus you were the first one to buy a print from me, so I can't be too mad! lol)

;) I don't see how it's boring, but we'll talk about it after the challenge.

I have one comment: "Love the ---, great image!"
Score: 3.9
Interpretation of challenge: I think I met both definitions as precisely as I'm ever known to (which is not often!).
Interpretation of result: ???

Thanks Sonifo. I'll try and lighten up a little. :)

Sorry Mav. If it makes you feel any better, I left a lot of "boring subject" comments so far. heh. Guess I'm hard to please.

Well I wish you'd post one on mine, to at least explain my under-4. The one comment I've gotten says (approximately) "great shot" and so is nice, but not helpful in this case.

I'm trying to make my way through commenting on all of them as the week goes on, so I'm sure you'll get one! heh.

Went back and re-adjusted votes given the controversy over the definition of Black on Black / low-key. I guess it's pretty subjective and like most themes around here, open to interpretation. That said, my interpretation was 18% gray to black in a low-key style; maximum detail with minimal lighting and good use of shadows to produce a sombre mood; apparently this view was not shared by all. IMHO the title and details of the challenge were in conflict; hopefully in the future challenge guidelines will be more explicit. FWIW this has nothing to do with the PMs I received from some of those who believed I was wrong, I just feel it's the fair thing to do. Cheers.

I really don't think it's necessary to get so huffy over this challenge... especially because they really are for fun. We all know full well that there are people that are going to be strict voters. We also know that, if you take a great photo, it will probably still do quite well, even if it doesn't completely meet the guidelines. So.. like someone basically said before, just take a deep breath.. relax... have fun with the challenges. Life's too short to stress over a contest with no prize. :P
