Hello everyone,

I finally bit the bullet and sold my Panasonic FZ20 and bought a rebel 350D. I love the camera but im not so impressed with the lens I bought. I got a cheap one because I am saving and planning to buy some good glass in the next few months. I am surprised how different an SLR is from a PS. It's going to take me a while to get used to it. Hopefully I can figure it all out in time to submit a photo for the current open challenges.

A got a quick question. Is there a noticeable difference in the sigma DG lenses and the regular ones. In particularly the sigma 105mm F2.8 macro. I found a used lens for $230 but its not the DG version. I’m not sure if I should get it or spend the extra and get the DG.

Thanks,
Ron

I believe the DG indicates that it is more digital friendly.

Check out the answer to question 24.

the kit lens may have been a better start.Having said that I desperately want to upgrade now.The kit lense doesn't do the camera justice.

I knew that it was designed to work better with the digital cameras but I just don’t know if it is worth $170 extra to get the DG version. According to DPC's equipment listing, more people here have the non-DG version and the pictures they have taken are beautiful. If you believe the difference is worth the $170 then I will save a bit more money. :)

I probably would have been happier with the kit lens but I ran across a good deal on a body only and couldn't see spending another $200 just to get the kit lens. I bought the tamron for $58. I figured that the money I saved by getting the cheap tamron will go towards a good one, maybe even some L glass. I am relatively pleased with the tamron now that I have played with it for a while and learned when it takes the best shot. Even at its worst, it still takes better shots than my PS ever thought about doing.

I believe that the Sigma 105mm macro in DG is actually a completly different design than the non DG version. All the Sigma lens are being converted over to DG versions now. All the rest have been the same except a different coating over the rear lens element from what I hear. They are suppose to reduce CA and flare and produce nicer colors.

Brianh, a member here, has the non DG version and really likes it.
Popular Photography has a review of the DG version and seem to like it.

The current issue also tested the Tokina 100 macro and they really seem to think highly of that lens.

The older lens like the macro you are looking at might have compatibility issues with your camera as well and give you an "error 99" messege, which means that you have to send it into Sigma to have it rechipped for free, as Brian had to do, so you should count on shipping costs to Sigma repair center and waiting time to your decision as well.

Lastly, another cheap option is to sell the kit and get a 50mm f1.8 prime lens, as it's very sharp and about $75, if you want to extend the range of the lens to a bit, a Tamron 1.4 Teleconverter will make the 50mm into a 70mm and the lens should still be plenty sharp, all for about $80 too. This maybe a more versatile and cheaper option than a used 105 macro.

Good luck
