Current score 4.8, 11 comments (one to DIE for) and 148 votes cast. Oh, well. I did something different for fear that the self portrait challenge would turn into a beauty contest. I think it may have somewhat, but that's human nature, I guess. There are some real hotties, men AND women, against whom I wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell if it were based on beauty alone. No big, if you survive 57 years with my (ordinary)looks you learn to get over it. I guess that's why good pics taken with humor and creativity are receiving higher scores from me. BUT, I won't hate you because you're beautiful, either! 8-)

After looking at your picts on your profiles, it looks like I'll have to get a South Park picture, too! Maybe that will improve my looks!

I think if people are willing to publish pictures of themselves, for all to see and all to comment, then those pictures and those people deserve a high-score.

IMHO

No wonder mine sucks, but the real reason I didn't publish a proper self portrait is because I don't want all the female dpchallege memebers PMing for a phone # ... HAHAHAHA

at first I was very irritated by my low score, then I looked at the comments I have received and realized the really stupid comments came from people who... ok, I'll be nice... and the really meaningful and insightful comments came from people whose work I respect and people who could actually SEE what I was going for... I guess what I am trying to say is THANK YOU and you've made my low score more bearable ;)

Jeez, this is NOT a beauty contest or am I wrong? I'm judging the quality of the picture, not the quality of the person.

Or is everybody judging this like a beauty contest??

Yes and No. I think most people seek to be as objective as possible in the voting (or I would like to think so). However, there are other factors ... subconsciously we are evaluating people all the time and this contest is not an exception ... plus people are judgemental by their nature.

I am glad people are confortable with who they are and they should be, but lets not go overboard. If you see a grotesque person - do you make a mental comment? Yes, you do! Just like everyone else, so lets not get blinded by esteem-mastrubation we see here.

I just got a comment that was so incredible (positive) that it made me tear up.

THANK YOU to those people who have taken time to comment on my entry. Some comments have made me laugh out loud but most have been truly insightful.

I've gotten 8 comments so far out of 169 votes. The six from female voters have all been very nice, positive comments. The two from male voters have been much more critical. Interesting indeed :)

168 votes, 13 comments all quite good..... 3 from the women, 10 from the blokes... obviously my appeal sits closer to my own side of the fence!!!!

got 19 comments from 163 voters...with 5.6+
all the comments are positive and with some suggestions...thanks folks...most of the voters told me that im so brave with my entry, well its just a test...do we need to submit a bolder, daring, unusual, or humorous images? my answer is yes...Visual Impacts works here, when you get their attention, then you get a high percentage to get a comments...but i dont knw if they will give you a good score, as of my entry...i recvd a very good reviews but my score is just ok. (my score in last challenge is much better, with almos the same approach)...Some gave me 10...THANKSSSSSS a lot..good luck to all...just enjoy the challenge.

I think we'll find out. If, at the end, the high score and low score are typical of your usual challenge.. maybe enough people were objective. But, say, if the top three are people that are usually not in the top twenty ... then I might be suspicious. I know that everyone has the chance to get a great shot every now and again, but, in general, the people that consistently get high scores should get high scores in this challenge, and the people that get low scores.. yadda yadda yadda. We'll just have to wait and see. The results might be a good indication of the level of maturity on this site. I don't think I'll be disappointed. And, like it was said before, you can't take THIS particular challenge TOO seriously.

My take on this would be, that if I personally get lots of high and lots of low votes, then I know that I achieved what I set out to do. IE I wanted to make the photo visually confronting - so by doing this I made a very in your face, "ugly" photo.
I'm actually quite photogenic (honestly, I am ;) so wanted the photo to be judged on its merits, rather than my looks.
So when voting finishes, I'll be looking at the high scores - because there's no way you could give my photo a 10 based on "good looks", but you would definitely give it a "1" if you were voting that way.

Nope. I'm judging by the picture, and the way it's done. Looks schmooks. lol.

I guess I'm hanging in there though

Up & down and still a bit to wait :)

twocentz: you must be very beautiful! jk. I can't possibly imagine what it would be like to receive 40+ comments on a picture. That's insane. As for my voting, I would rather see a technically good and interesting photo of a not so good looking person than an average or poor shot of a good looking person. To me it's about portraying something about yourself.

As a first timer here, I was really hoping for feedback since it's the very FIRST time I've ever tried to see what other people I don't know think about my work. I appreciated both of the comments which were very positive but really wish I knew WHAT others were thinking. I was also wondering about the scoring since a 1 - 10 range is pretty wide but from some of the comments in the forum I've been reading, it sounds as if scoring is relatively low and that 7's or 8's can be winners, is that right? Can someone fill me in on how this all works???

people seem to comment on images that strike them - positively or negatively. If yours doesn't stand out in any way, you're less likely to get them.

and my guess is there won't be many over 7, and an average above 8 would be stellar (voters aren't too forthcoming with the big numbers).

BobbyLilly,

Same here. Only 3 comments on my first entry. My shot must have been more boring than I thought ;) Or people didn't get the message. I have to work on that in the future.

Pedro may be right too. If the picture isn't either very good or very bad, people probably aren't likely to comment.
06/20/2003 08:23:03 PM · #46
BobbyLilly: There are only a handlfull of entries (relatively speaking) that have ever even finished above 8. Winners are usually in the 7 range. This shows the highest rated photos from all the challenges.

With 200+ photos to evaluate every challenge, most people have a hard time now and again with recieving low numbers of comments. As the guys above mentioned, it helps if your shot stands out *somehow*, good or bad (but hopefully good!).

I haven't entered the last couple challenges, and I'm not in this one, so I've decided to set the goal to TRY (try!) to leave a comment on every single photo this time. I've done 105 so far, and some are brief, but I'm basically trying to give my first impressions, something good, a suggestion of something to change.

If I don't get to yours it's not for lack of tryin', but there are a lot of photos this week and I've never tried this before! :)

(I hope the comments are helpful to you guys... it's sure helping me learn about photography to write them!)

I know which one is yours imagesloyola...and I scored it high. Controversy is ever more fun than high votes any day. This is just a sampling of middle thought. Go with your art. I do believe that people become so involved in critique for their own sense of righteousness...that the beauty is lost. Better to see the beauty and feel the moment than live beyond the means of passionate excess.

carolee--you commented on mine and your comment meant a lot to me-- this was my favorite shot i have submitted so far and it isnt doing so well, but I wanted to submit a shot i genuinely enjoyed taking and felt it was a bit more creative than many of my others I took for this challenge. Anyway your comment really "got" what i was trying to do-- so thank you!!
06/20/2003 10:16:39 PM · #50
carolee---you're right im getting a lot of comments...just read your comments...thanks a lot and thanks too for your suggestions..its highly appreciated..

grigrigirl...thanks but just checked my submissions...i cant find your comments...or maybe its not yet posted..ill just wait for it.

just great that male voters also likes my submission, just one guy said "yikes" but infairness to him he gaves me a high score of 8. thanks blobster.

most girls voters...loves my entry...WOW im so amazed...

what im getting is that...girls likes my entry.
honestly, im so happy with this submission..why? i recvd mixed reactions. the best thing here is that they gave both praises and suggestions to improved my pix...which is the purpose of challenge.

im also trying hard to finish my voting, and its very tough too,
im also doing the same thing, get the best thing about the pix and evaluate it, and try to see if i can give a suggestion...as of 44 pix i evaluate 5 pix got a 10 for me. and nobody got a score lower than 5.

i got my own criteria:
composition 2.5
visual impact 2.5
message 2.5
adherence to the theme 2.5

so with this, i'm so sure that nobody can get a low score from me. and besides i highly considered the EFFORT of the photographer...its tough to create an idea or concept...just dont knw why some voters...they just easily score you a 1, anyway that's their opinion and just respect that.

GOT A ONE BIG QUESTION? IF YOU MARKED ONE SUBMISSION WITH A RATING OF "1" ARE YOU SURE, YOU ARE HELPING THE PHOTOGRAPHER? is that encouraging.

what i want here is that...help the photographer improve their works, lets just give a fair score and encouraging comments and suggestion..
honestly, even a single word is encouraging.

thanks! and good luck.

enjoy the challenge...its now a part of my system.....
