Dear Shadow,

Please listen to me. If you encourage ranting anymore, I will have to find a light with which to eliminate you.

Your friendly lawperson,
Mav

I'm not so bothered about my low ranking as the score relects more or less what I had imagined. What bothers me, after having looked through the final placings, is why certain badly done shots are doing so well. And (more ranting) why some people only mark as helpful comments that say their photo was good.

It's common that people mark "helpful" for comments that praises. It's human nature. However, I'm lucky enough to have been marked "helpful" for some of the negative comments that I put on photos. Remove those that add helpful to all their comments, these rest are people that take criticism positively. Thanks.

I am one of those that marks all comments helpful because they are all helpful to me. Every one of them helps me to look at my photo the way they see it and improve. The good comments make me feel positive and confident. I even marked yours helpful, shadow, and you told me "I can smell the stench". Whatever that means? I would have liked you to elaborate a little. Smell the stench from my photo? Smell the stench from my barnyard? The photo is so good that you could even smell it? It made me look at my photo, again, and see the mud that I had dismissed and re-evaluate the shot.

my score wasn't to bad for magazines but what really bugged me was that those who didn't know what Guidepost were didn't bother to realize it was a Christian magazine and the photo I did was very similar to a recent cover...I wonder would I have done better with Readers Digest as the title cause they also frequently do sky/cloud covers.

Marjo, You were referring to the comment I put on your "Home Sweet Home" submission. It shows a nice photo of horses in their stables. My comment actually says that the photo looks immersing enough that I could almost "smell the stench" even by looking at it. It's a compliment actually, sorry if it gave you any other impressions :)

I agree with you, if you look through the first 50 places you'll see a lot of technically bad images (and there is no way for them to be on the cover) and that shots finally placed better than a lot of better shots because of unknown reason for me.

we have a hard-to-please crowd of ppl in DPC, dont we? :)
Have fun, sometimes it's exciting to get the photo that they wanted.
Other times, just go get a second opinion. A pile of sh*t to some may be a pot of gold to others. Relax.

Thanks for the explanation, Shadow. No apology needed. (That's what I thought you meant.)
My point was just to show everyone that comments can easily be misunderstood. The viewer doesn't always get it.
Again, I appreciate all comments and need to start posting more! I still don't think I have enough expertise to be helpful, but I can at least say what I like or don't like.

This is my post from the "other" thread, probably should have gone here:

This gallery at pBase has my original entry, two versions of a mock-up cover, and a sample cover of the "real" magazine. I'm curious whether seeing the layout would have made any difference in how people look at/evaluate a photo like this, which has a specific purpose.

Not all magazines are looking for the spectacular action or nature shot -- those might not be appropriate. I see a possible "problem" where people are judging the photo on its intrinsic charactaristics rather its than suitability for a particular publication.
