I have to decide on a topic for a piece of photography coursework, and wondered if anyone could help suggest something. You can see some of my photos here (not a comprehensive selection, to be fair, but gives you a flavour).

I will be using entirely traditional B+W processes, but expect I'll get into colouring at some point. The project can be based around a theme or a style of photography, or a style of developing, and I'll need to look at other artists work as part of the project.

If anyone would care to have a look at some of my work, and suggest either a theme or what area you think I'm better/worse at, or simply a suggestions of photog.s to look at, that'd be great. Also, critiques on any of those photos won't go amiss.

Thanks guys

Kirsty
ps some of the photos still have artefacts from scanning :-/

oh, and these are my favourites from dpc if that helps

Tough to give you that kind of advice. You seem to have a talent for b&w images, especially with turning mundane subjects into great images. Maybe do some B&W landscapes or urban shots depending where you live.

Just looking at the few in your own portfolio and the site you linked, I think you might go with florals...you have a good eye for light and detail, as well as for creative angles. The horses are another option. Both would do well in b/w. I'm sure some others can suggest alternate routes as well.

Not sure about styles/developing/etc...maybe some of the more seasoned vets can share that info with you.

Good luck! :)

thanks robert, laurie.. I don't feel i've discovered my niche yet, so your feedback is really helpful. I went thru a phase of florals, but wasnt sure there was any substance to them, beyond being technically ok.
Maybe i should try them again then. I'll also try some landscapes, perhaps combiming urban and rural juxtaposed. hmmm....thats got me thinking, thanks

Bump for the morning crew
any other comments very much appreciated

I recently went on a traditional B&W course entitled "A Photographic Journey" in which we could interpret any kind of journey - physical, emotional etc. To use your variety of skills you could do a physical journey through a town/street/house etc that you know well. It would give you a lot of opportunity to do a wide spectrum of textures, lighting etc still linked to that journey. We walked through an historic local village with a central village clock - the clock photo started and ended the journey showing not only the time of day but the different lighting. It was very interesting and allowed me to shoot using just about every technique I knew.

Kirsty - just realised you are in the UK. So am I - we did our journey through West Wycombe and up to the Hellfire Club caves. Lots of opportunities for something like this in Hants as well - lots of old and new mixed together. Yvonne (Bucks)
