My picture was disqualified.. All it says is my picture was disquaified because "EXIF data reports 04/13/2001".. I believe this is well within the guidelines for this challenge.. Whats up??

Maybe because 2001 was a year ago. Do you need to check the date settings on your camera?
04/15/2002 01:57:06 PM · #3
Well where did that year go.
04/15/2002 01:59:18 PM · #4
Good question. I notice your shot from last week was dated correctly. Did you recently change camera battery?
04/15/2002 02:10:32 PM · #5
Yeah I change batteries alot.. This thing eats them.. It's never changed dates on me before.. It's only the year.. You know I am just an amature and I love this site. I enjoy trying to come up with a shot that I am satisfied with. It's sure discouraging to have taken 300+ pictures to have something like this happen..

That happened to me on a shot I had to throw out 2 weeks ago. I reset the date after my batteries were changed and accidentally put it at March instead of April. Doggone dead batteries!

I guess checking mundane stuff like dates is part of the challenge of this site. I look forward to seeing your next weeks submission. I'm sure the date thing will be fixed. Good luck.

The stupid date screwed me over on this challenge too, but I'm looking forward to the new challenge.

I understand the need for rules but I also understand the need for common sense. DLH's picture was diqualified for having the year wrong? Let's think about this for a second. What are the odds that they went back through all of their pictures taken from exactly a year ago and tediously looked at each picture's Exif info and found one that matched the theme and decided to use it. I bet most of us are using cameras that are not even a year old yet. It just seams so obvious that the picture is legit and even in the smallest possible chance that it isn't legit than what are the odds of it ever happening again. We're talking about some incredible odds here. I think that it should have been accepted and a simple e-mail to DLH should have been sent reminding them of the date issue. It would have been simple and discreet. This doesn't seem to be the textbook case of why the date rule is in place.

I see pictures being disqualified, except for the two that I suggested were scanned. I hate to be a PITA about it, but if people are being disqualified on technicalities then we should definitely be getting the scanned shots out of the voting so we don't waste time with them.

Riiight, and what are the chances that a script that I wrote went through all of the pictures and disqualified those there were marked with the wrong date. Chances are very high that that happened exactly. The problem will be dealt with.

Tim - I tend to agree. But I think it would lead to admin. spending time trying to second guess date errors and listening to appeals. I know I would have appealed to their good sense if I thought it was fair for me to do it. Makes more sense to toss full responsibility on the photographer. Heck - I'm not even at winning challenges level yet. I could have submitted with the wrong date, got my fours and fives and went on to the next challenge. Instead, I went honest and chalked it up to a lesson.

Langdon, I certainly understand that certain things are probably automated and if it is too difficult or takes too long to go through potential disqualifications than yes, photos not meeting the exact rules should be simply disqualified and we move on. But can't the computer just 'red flag' the pictures that aren't meeting the rules and then you guys manually decided what stays and what goes based on your own judgements? I'm not trying to start anything here, I think this site is incredible just as it stands, you guys are doing a great job. I'm just thinking of ways to make it a little bit friendlier to photographers if an honest mistake is obvious.

I think the red flagging might be just as much work for us as going through each image. Automation is key. It's half the reason we can work on other things and not have to baby sit our site.

For now, we listen to appeals and un-DQ images where necessary. This way the users' photo only experiences a little down-time, and in the end users who vote on all images will end up voting on once-DQ'd images. Maybe in the future we can assign users to this task -- a giving back to the community type of thing?

My reply was very short, and I didn't mean to give the notion that I thought you were starting anything. Feedback is necessary in all cases.

Thanks.

OK, after a little checking I owe at least one apology on the whole scanning issue. After this challenge is over I will be happy to try to help figure out why the vertical lines occured in a particular shot. I am sorry I was so persistent. Hey, at least I learned something new!Perhaps we can all avoid the problem in the future. Excuse me while I go adjust my voting.

I also recommended this same photo for further investigation. I apologize to the photographer for any undue stress and I also would like to be included on any followup info that is obtained on that particular problem. I would also like to thank the photographer for providing the originals and an explanation of what happend... I have never seen anything like it before either. If this forum should ever have a conference in some city, i'll buy a few rounds for you!

Cheers and thanks for the excellent photo :)
